Mount Ayr Community High School
1969 Ayrian

"I only hope I have given as much as I have received."

The above words express the thoughts of a dedicated teacher, coach, husband and father. Mr. Mc Neill came to Mt. Ayr a football coach in 1948. Then he began a football dynasty in southern Iowa unequaled anywhere. In 19 years here he has compiled a record of 116 wins, 47 loses and 2 ties. He spent 1953 and 1954 in Iowa Falls, returning to Mt. Ayr to take over the football reins, his teams became the perennial champions of the Blue Grass conference and later the Tall Corn league. In 1964 he was named the Des Moines Register's Prep Coach of the Year. At times a basketball coach, other times a baseball coach, always our "Professor of American History." To you, "Joe," we dedicate the 1969 Ayrian.

Each Fall Mr. Perry puts together one of the top marching units in Southwest Iowa. Besides performing at football games, The Raider Marching band attends college homecomings and this year will again march in the Drake Relays parade.

The 1968 Raiders ended a rough season with just three wins against six losses, two of which were forfeits. The Tall Corn Conference as a whole was marked by seeming upsets with no team having a clear cut superiority.

This year's fourteen lettermen: Weldon Abarr, Steve Clouse, Bob Coulson, Cecil Dolecheck, Dick Elliott, Alan Fetty, Tim Irving, Mike McNeill, Ron Morgan, Ron Mobley, Tom Pollock, Neil Rinehart, Steve Roe, Lonnie Sharp, Rod Shields and Randy Sobotka. The Coaches: Chet Roed, Ronal Scott, Mel Clark, Terry Myers, and Head Coach, Joe McNeill.
