Ellston High School Alumni Banquet
50-Year Honor Class of 1936
May 24, 1986

Vernon Wesley Lyons

Vernon Wesley Lyons, youngest son of Charles and Minnie Lyons, was born March 13, 1917 on a farm north of Murray, Iowa. in 1927, the family moved to Ellston, Iowa. He went through grade school and high school, graduating there in 1936, and began working around Ellston for 3 or 4 years with his father. Also different farmers in different years. Decided I had enough farming so moved to Eureka, Kansas and was employed in a creamery. Worked my way up to be foreman with lots of experience in the dairyline, making ice cream, butter, cheese and milk products. Got itchy feet after a few years, wasn't married yet and ready to ramble so I quit and came to Omaha, Neb. and worked for a creamery or dairy 2 months. I didn't like busy city life so quit and moved to Creston, Iowa. Helped care for my parents and after a short while I got a job with Armour & Co. Worked my way up to foreman in the creamery department and stayed till the plant closed in 1957. I was married to Fern Reish in 1948 and our son Gregory was born in 1953. The company transferred me and my family to Mitchell, South Dakota. I worked here thirteen years and they closed this plant. Our second son, Bruce, was born in South Dakota and Fern and I took a foster boy, Dean Anderson, to raise. The authorities allowed us to bring Dean to Iowa with us so we moved back to Creston, Iowa, and I finally got a job with Center milk buying station, weighed in milk and loaded semi trucks with milk which was hauled to Maryville, Mo. to make cheese. In 1970 this firm closed so I applied for a job at Iowa State Savings Bank. With good help and friends I was hired as parking attendant outside and custodial work indoors. I lost my first wife with cancer in 1975. I was lonesome and met my present wife, Evelyn. We have been married eleven years now, happy and contented, each having children to help down lifes road. Have been serving on the church board many years also.
