Grand Valley Tigers add second victory of summer

Grand Valley's Tigers moved their record to 2-0 this week with a South Central Six conference debut victory over Lineville-Clio 11-9 in Kellerton Thursday night.

The Tigers took an early lead and were up 5-3 until Lineville splurged with five runs in the top of the fifth. Darin WOOKEY, who had pounded a solo home run in the second inning, came through again in the bottom of the fifth for Grand Valley, this with a 3-run blast, to tie the game.

The Tigers then went on to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to ice the victory.

Darren CAMPBELL and Aaron SICKELS both singled twice and Todd BOLES, Ricky VANDERFLUGHT and Roy FIFER all picked up hits for the GV squad.

Aaron SICKELS hurled the victory, striking out six and walking 13.

Grand Valley Tigerettes drop game to Prescott

Grand Valley's Tigerettes lost a 24-12 battle with Prescott in South Central Six conference action in Prescott June 11.

The Tigerettes went out to an 8-6 lead in the game, which saw 21 free bases handed out by the pitchers.

Prescott came back to lead 9-8 in the bottom of the second, so the Tigerettes added four runs to lead 12-9. A seven-run third inning for Prescott put the game out of reach and eight more runs in the eighth ended the game on the 12-run rule right there.

Debbie HARRIS, who has been hitting consistently for the Tigerettes all season, picked up a single. Teresa GAGE and Jeannie VANDERFLUGHT had the other Tigerette hits.

"Our pitching has been weak this summer, even though Stacy SHAUB has worked hard to improve," Coach Sharon WHITSON said.

SHAUB pitched the first three innings and part of the fourth, striking out two, walking eight, hitting a batter and yielding seven hits. Teresa GAGE came on in relief, walking four.

Prescott used two pitchers as well and was led by Dan DODGE in hitting with a pair of singles.
