Highest distinction earned by pair of Iowa graduates

Southern Iowa had two of the top graduates from the college of business at the University of Iowa this year.

Melissa WINKLER of Mount Ayr (far right) and Cheryl DAVENPORT (near right) of Afton received top awards when they participated in the Henry B. Tippie College of Business commencement at the University of Iowa Saturday. Both of the students graduated with highest distinction, placing them in the top two percent of the graduating class.

DAVENPORT, a 2001 East Union graduate, graduated with highest distinction in ecomonics and was honored with the collegiate scholar award. She was also the recipient of the Hancher Finkbine Medallion, which is the highest honor the University of Iowa bestows on students.

It was established at the University of Iowa in 1964 to recognize student leadership, learning and loyalty. She was also a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society.

WINKLER, a 2001 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school, graduated with highest distinction in accounting and was honored as an accounting faculty scholar. She was the recipient of the outstanding accounting senior award and was honored at a banquet given by the State of Iowa Certified Public Accountant Association as well.

She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a member of Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society and a member of Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity.
