Mount Ayr Hy-Vee Store Director Roger Townsend was named Community Involvement Store Director for the Hy-Vee company for 2016.Townsend was selected over all other store directors for his involvement in many local organizations and charities.
"Roger is a long-time Hy-Vee veteran and is a perfect example of the kind of store director involvedment that is expected of the winner of this award," said Hy-Vee's Randy Edeker. Townsend received a plaque as well as induction into the Hy-Vee Hall of Fame.
Townsend, who will be leaving Mount Ayr to take over the Hy-Vee store in Humboldt on January 1, came to Mount Ayr in 2012. While here, he was an active board member of the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce, the Wellness Coalition and
served as board president of the Ringgold County Conservation Foundation. He was instrumental in helping raise enough funds for that group to break ground on the Dragoon Trace Nature Center which is currently under construction. Townsend also was a member of the Ayr Days Committee, the Ringgold Outdoor Alliance and Pheasants Forever. He also helped coach second and third grade flag football.
Townsend started the annual "Chicken Wings for Charity" event during Ayr Days which has raised almost $10,000 for local charities. The "Hy-Vee Sack" promotion with the Mount Ayr Raider football team also allowed large amonts of food to be donated to the needy.
Townsend and his wife Amber have three children -- Nolan, Morgan and Ellen.
