Iowa State Fair will draw many participants from across county

Ringgold county will be represented at the Iowa State Fair in many ways when the fair opens for its annual fun in Des Moines today (Thursday).

The fair is scheduled to run through Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.

Many 4-H and FFA members will participate, there will be people active in open exhibit competition and residents will take part in many other ways as well.

Taking part in the state fair parade Wednesday night was Ringgold County Fair queen Jamie NOVAK. She will also take part in the state fair queen contest.

The county junior cowgirl queen Morgan QUICK will also be participating in state fair competition at the fair.

Membrs of the Clearfield Lions Club will again be shuttling people around the fairgrounds for the 45th year of providing this service to fairgoers.

Many local people will be helping man booths and exhibits during the fair as well. Among places where familiar faces will be seen at the tourism, Cattlemen and Pork Producers booths.

Several area residents will be showing livestock and participating in food classes beyond the 4-H and FFA competition, but no pre-fair information was available about these entrants.

4-H projects at state fair

A total of 26 4-H entries were chosen to advance to the Iowa State Fair following judging from the Ringgold County Fair.

Projects in home economics, expressive arts, science and engineering, ag and natural resources and personal development were to be judged by the time the fair opened.

County 4-H members who had projects advancing to the state fair included:

Claire ANDRESEN of the Ringgold Rockets had a perfect white bread entry and Tom HOSFIELD of the Sunshine Workers had a pin-wheel cookies project that were named alternates to state.

Share the fun entry

One Share the Fun entry will be taking part in activity at the state fair.

Tom HOSFIELD will play a trumpet solo as part of the Share the Fun session held at noon Thursday, Aug. 20.

4-H livestock entries

A number of county 4-Hers will be taking livestock projects to the state fair as well.

Shows and the days they will be participating include:

Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 11-13: -- Horse Show: Morgan QUICK and Logan WIMER.

Monday, Aug. 17 -- Market Sheep Show: Tyler BECKER; Breeding Swine and Derby Pig Show; Johnathan TRIGGS and Tyler TRIGGS.

Tuesday, Aug. 18 -- Breeding Beef Show: Taylan ABARR, Claire ANDRESEN, Tyler BECKER, Bailey CAMERON, Kaitlyn HOLMES, Katelyn WARIN, Hagan WILLIS and Chloe YODER; Breeding Sheep Show: Tyler BECKER; Market Swine Show: Johnathan TRIGGS and Tyler TRIGGS.

Wednesday, Aug. 19 -- Market Beef Show: Holly ENGLAND and April SHIELDS.

Thursday, Aug. 20 -- Dairy Goat Show: Allison FOOKEN and Sarah REASONER; Market Goat Show: Tyler HAYSE and Shelby REGER.

FFA participation

Two FFA members are participating with projects at the state fair.

Kelsey MEESTER will be showing horses at the horse show Thursday, Aug. 13.

Amy WEEDA will be showing sheep at the sheep show on Thursday, Aug 13 as well.

Talent show

Jessie RICKER will be participating in the Bill Riley Talent Show at the state fair as the winner of the show at the Ringgold County Fair. The date for the performance was not available at press time.

Many from county earn top prizes at Iowa State Fair

Ringgold county residents have been busy at the Iowa State Fair over the past week and the first of the results have been received.

The fair continues through Sunday, Aug. 23, and more results will be reported as they are received.

4-H and foods competitions were among the results available this week.

4-H exhibit awards

A total of 16 Ringgold county 4-Hers received blue ribbons in judging at the Iowa State Fair.

Foods competition

In the Midwest Living cookie contest, three area bakers had a number of placings.

Hester DERSCHEID of Ellston placed first in rum balls, first in unrolled sugar cookies, secondin unfrosted brownies, second in the two-layer bar, second in unfrosted cookie other than named, third in coconut cookies, third in molasses cookies and third in low cholesterol cookies.

Barbara KIBURZ of Tingley placed first in peanut blossoms, first in oatmeal raisin drop cookies, first in potato chip cookies, first Scandinavian cookies, second in gingersnaps, second in molasses cookies, second in chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, second in sour cream cookies, second in high fiber cookies, second in Oriental cookies, third in white chocolate drop cookies, third in butterscotch oatmeal drop cookies and honorable mention in cookies made with honey.

Judy KIRBURZ-HARRISON of Mount Ayr placed first in ranger cookies, first in cookies other than named and second in chocolate chip drop cookies.

In the Jello cooking contest, Barbara KIBURZ of Tingley placed second in the dessert category.

In the Nan's "Nummiest" Cookies contest, Barbara KIBURZ of Tingley placed second with hr Grandma's Oatmeal Raisin Cookie recipe in the unfrosted division.

In the best homemade garlic bread competition, Hester DERSCHEID of Ellston won second place with her Garlic Roasted Red Pepper Bread.

In the Grandma's Molasses Munchies competition, Barbara KIBURZ of Tingley claimed third place overall and $50. She had the second place entry in the dessert competition as well.

In the King Arthur Bread competition, Hester DERSCHEID of Ellston had the top sourdough bread entry.

In the Phil Strong's "State Fair" mincemeat contest judging, Hester DERSCHEID of Ellston took third place. In the new contest, entries were presented in crocks similar to the one used in the movie and judged on taste, presentation and orginality.

In the King Arthur yeast rolls competition, Hester DERSCHEID of Ellston took first place with her butterhorn rolls.

In the Sleep Hollow Hors D'Oeuvres contest, Pamela COOPER of Mount Ayr took third place in the adult division.

In the Johnsonville Italian Sausage cooking competition, Hester DERSCHEID of Ellston won second place.

State fair over but results still pouring in

Placers in a number of different contests at the Iowa State Fair were released this week after the closing of the fair on Sunday.

This week's results included more 4-H livestock results, some other beef show results, food contest results and more.

4-H livestock results

Results from many of the 4-H livestock competitions were also released this week.

In the breeding beef comptition, Katelyn WARIN received a purple ribbon for her Simmental entry. Hagan WILLIS received a purple ribbon for his Hereford entry and Chloe YODER received a purple ribbon for her Foundation Simmental entry. Blue ribbons went to Claire ANDRESEN for her Shorthorn Plus entry and Bailey CAMERON for her commercial heifer. Taylen ABARR received a red ribbon for her Chianina entry. ABARR also received a blue ribbon in the beef showmanship for ninth and 10th graders.

In the market beef competition, April SHIELDS received a purple in the crossbred steer competition.

In the breeding swine competition, Johnathan TRIGGS received a purple ribbon with a Spotted gilt entry. TRIGGS also received blue ribbons for a spoted gilt entry and a Yorkshire gilt entry and red ribbons for a Yorkshire gilt and two commercial gilt entries.

Tyler TRIGGS received red ribbons for a Hampshire gilt entry, two Duroc entries and two commercial gilt entries.

The TRIGGS brothers both had red ribbons in the crossbred derby barrows light weight division. Johnathan TRIGGS received a purple ribbon in the swine showmanship for seventh and eighth graders and Tyler TRIGGS received a blue ribbon in the swine showmanship for fifth and sixth graders.

In the market swine show both Johnathan TRIGGS and Tyler TRIGGS had red ribbon entries.

In the market sheep show, Tyler BECKER received purple ribbons with both market lamb entries. He also received a blue ribbon in the performance lamb live competition.
