Ringgold County residents claim Iowa State Fair prizes
Results from some 4-H events, some of the food contests and other competition was reported this week from the Iowa
State Fair. They includ 16 blue ribbons for 4-H exhibits, a sweepstakes cookie victory and a turkey calling contest
first place, among other winners. 4-H exhibit results
A total of 16 Ringgold county 4-Hers received blue ribbons for their entries at the Iowa State Fair this year. Blue
ribbon winners included:
Erin DOLECHECK, Kellerton, visual arts, junk collage. Elisha DOUBLEDAY, Mount Ayr, personal development. Hospice of
Central Iowa volunteer, and photography, photo of blue building. Kirk FORD, Tingley, photography. Tom HOSFIELD,
Redding, photography, corn picture. Leah KLEJCH, Mount Ayr, consumer and management, hooded towel comparison.
Ashley PHELPS, Kellerton, ag and natural resources, flower potting. Shelby REGER, Redding, clothing, rag quilt poncho.
Brook RYCHNOVSKY, Diagonal, science, mechanics and engineering, saddle stand. Laura SHERVHEIM, Redding, food and
nutrition, violet jelly. Matthew SHERVHEIM, Redding, science, mechanics and engineering, sound remix.
Kaci STACKHOUSE, Mount Ayr, clothing, pink dress. Taylor STILL, Mount Ayr, food and nutrition, chocolate tea bread,
and personal development, decorated egg shells. Quency VOS, Ellston, personal development, 4-H fund raiser.
Katelyn WARIN, Maloy, science, mechanics and engineering, cattle DVD. Brandon WERNER, Shannon City, photography,
photo of hands. A total of nine 4-H entries received red ribbons at the state fair. They included:
Paige DAUGHTON, Kellerton, home improvement, sampler quilt; Kirk FORD, Tingley, photography; Emily FOX, Mount Ayr,
science, mechanics and engineering, deck chair; Hannah GLENDENNING, Redding, photography, wooden gate photo;
Tom HOSFIELD, Redding, food and nutrition, strawberry-rhubarb jam; Jena JAMES, Mount Ayr, visual arts, eco-friendly
kitchen design; Leah KLEJCH, Mount Ayr, home improvement, beaded silverware. Receiving a white ribbon was
Allison FOOKEN, Ellston, visual arts, charcoal horse drawing. Receiving a merit award was Paige DAUGHTON, Kellerton,
communication, 4-H Is Fun poster. Receiving a certificate of participation was Aaron DAVENPORT, Diagonal, historical/family
heritage, wrenches; and, Hannah FLETCHELL, Mount Ayr, historical/family heritage, CD 4-H write-up.
4-H livestock results4-H livestock reports have been received from the horse show and the sheep show at the
fair so far. Morgan QUICK of Redding received a purple ribbon in both pole bending and barrel racing in the exhibitor
grade 7-9 level. Logan WIMER of Diagonal received a blue ribbon in barrel racing, and red ribbons in western pleasure,
pole bending and light horse showmanship. In the sheep show, Tyler BECKER of Diagonal received a blue ribbon for his
market lamb and a blue ribbon for his performance lamb entry. Youth bird callerHeath EVANS
of Diagonal took first place in the turkey calling contest in the youth bird calling contest. The contest was part of the
Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions. State fair paradeThe Southwest Iowa Honor Marching
Band received the prestigious Governor's Cup Award as the top band in the state fair parade. Ashley PHELPS is a member
of the color guard for that band. In addition, Peggy WHITSON was the parade marshal and the state fair queen candidate,
Holly ENGLAND, was in the parade. Midwest Living cookie contestTwo Ringgold county bakers
placed in the Midwest Living cookie contest at the fair, led by Barbara KIBURZ who won the sweepstakes award by claiming
seven class titles and 11 second and third place finishes. Barbara KIBURZ of Tingley placed first in the coconut
cookie division, the filled cookie division, the snickerdoodle division, the oatmeal without raisins drop cookie division,
the chocolate chip cookie division, the ranger cookie division, and the frosted drop cookie division. KIBURZ was
second in the sugar cookie unrolled division, the Scandinavian cookie division, the unfrosted drop cookie division, the
sour cream division, the molasses cookie division and the dried fruit drop division. She placed third in the molded
or pressed peanut butter cookie division, the potato chip cookie division, the white chocolate cookie division and
the frosted chocolate drop cookie division. Hester DERSCHIED of Kellerton placed first in the potato chip
cookie division, first in the sugar free cookie division, second in the filled cookie division and second in the
chocolate crackles division. Tasty Bites for BettePamela COOPER RINGGOLD (?) of Mount
Ayr took two placings in the Tasty Bites for Bette competition. She placed second in the salad division with her Roasted
Butternut Spanish salad. She placed third in the dessert division with her Java Enhanced Chocolate Pudding.
Cake contest winnersTwo Ringgold county bakers took placings in the Smile in Every Aisle cake
contest at the state fair. Hester DERSCHEID of Kellerton placed second in the raw apple cake division. Louise B. COTHRON
of Kellerton placed third in the gingerbread division. Rolls contestThe King Arthur yeast
rolls competition saw one Ringgold county winner. Hester DERSCHEID of Kellerton placed third in the cloverleaf rolls
division. Bread baking contestHester DERSCHEID and Louise COTHRON, both of Kellerton,
took placings in the King Arthur Bread baking contest at the fair. DERSCHEID placed second in the andama (banana?) bread
division and third place in the oatmeal bread division. COTHRON placed first in the pita bread division.
Appetizer contestHester DERSCHEID of Kellerton took second place in the Appetizers with Pampered
Chef Jamaican Jerk Rub competition at the fair. Entries were judged on creativity, eye appeal, flavor and texture.
Fine arts competitionRebecca ABARR of Redding won an adult merit award in the fine arts
competition at the Iowa State Fair. She received the award for a basket she made called "March Maelstrom." It is a willow
basket coiled on a shed antler that her son found last spring.
Haylea ENGLAND, 9, from Mount Ayr, performs a dance routine as part of the Bill Riley Talent Show
