SIPR brings back an old Kellerton tradition
Southern Iowa Parks and Recreation (SIPR), a non-profit organization in Kellerton, has been working hard to help restore the town of Kellerton and turn it back into the town that they all grew up to love. At a board meeting in early September, a board member brought up the old Kellerton tradition of going around town singing Christmas Carols. This tradition stopped in the late 80s to early 90s, but many SIPR members remembered and loved this tradition so they soon decided to bring it back to Kellerton. On Thursday, December 22, 2016, 18 community members braved the cold weather for 3 1/2 hours to sing Christmas carols to their local residents. The group gathered on a lowboy trailer with hay bales while wearing Santa hats, just so they could relive the old time tradition and pass it on to future generations. SIPR traveled up and down every north and south road in Kellerton singing carols while the children walked around knocking on doors and passing out Christmas greetings for the SIPR organization. Community members who helped sing Christmas carols were Nici Minnick, Derek, Megan, and Tyson Naill, Kubysa, Karter, Skylar, and Ryker Edwards, Ben and Amanda Jackson, Chad, Jamie, Darrian, and Kaidan Holmes, Riley and Conlee Stark, and Jaixen and Jaize Frost. A huge thank you goes out to J and S Pub in Kellerton. They generously donated hot chocolate, popcorn, and a place for SIPR to warm up on their way through town. SIPR has a few upcoming events for all community members to enjoy. Every third Saturday of the month, they host a free will donation Breakfast for Supper from 5-7 p.m. at the SIPR building [Community Center.] On January 28 they will be hosting a Cribbage Tournament at 10 a.m. Come to the SIRP building every first and third Tuesday of the month when the Kellerton Fire Department hosts bingo at 6 p.m. SIPR is always looking for new
community members to join, community involvement ideas, and donations. For more information feel free to contact a SIPR member or email us at siprkellerton@gmail.com. Look for us on Facebook at SIPR-Kellerton.
