Shelley part of firefighter memorial service in Maryland

Richard SHELLEY was one of 11 firefighters from the Indianola Fire Department who were invited to attend the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial held the weekend of November 15 at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD. The memorial is held each year.

Of the 89 fallen firefighters honored this year, 72 lost their lives in the line of duty during 2010. One of those fallen firefighters was from Guthrie Center. The Indianola Honor Guard joined honor guard members from across the U.S. to participate in different events over the weekend, which included guarding the memorial, the chapel, the honor flag which was one of the 9-11 flags, and ringing the bells for Bells Across America.

SHELLEY, son of Cindy and Ed DUGAN of Mount Ayr, and Don MINKS, son-in-law of Larry and Marlene CRAWFORD formerly of Mount Ayr, assisted by presenting a United States flag to one of the 89 families.

On Saturday night the group attended the candlelight vigil.

A total of 20 firemen and spouses flew to Reagan International Airport on Wednesday, Nov. 12. On Thursday, they joined other honor guards from across the country to participate in the presentation of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. They also met the D.C. fire chief and toured a Washington, D.C. fireboat as well as the many D.C. national monuments. On the way to Emmitsburg, they visited Gettysburg, PA.
