SEARCHERS LOOK FOR DROWNING VICTIM
IN THREE MILE LAKE

by Mike PETERSON, KSIB, Creston, Union County, Iowa

An apparent drowning in Three Mile Lake near Afton in Union County is the first death at the three-year-old lake. Search efforts will resume today for 50-year-old Don NEWTON of Kellerton whois believed to have drowned Sunday afternoon. Union County Sheriff John COULTER says NEWTON was among four people on a boat when a ski blew overboard.

COULTER tried to recover it, but was fully clothed with his work boots on. The sheriff says alcohol consumption, plus the weight of the clothing and boots, played a part in the drowning. NEWTON was not wearing alife jacket. High winds approaching 35 miles per hour hampered recovery efforts yesterday.

by Mike PETERSON, KSIB, Creston, Union County, Iowa

Union County authorities have recovered the body of a man who drowned in Three Mile Lake. Authorities recovered the body of 50-year old Don NEWTON of Kellerton. NEWTON had been missing since June 5th when he fell out of a boat on the lake while trying to recover a water ski.

Union County Sheriff John COULTER says heavy rain and cold water probably kept NEWTON's body from surfacing.
