Helen Terry honored as hospice volunteer

Mount Ayr's Helen TERRY, one of these dedicated volunteers for HCI Hospice Care Services, has been recognized for her contributions by the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Iowa.

TERRY began volunteering eight years ago with the hope of making a difference in the life of someone in need. The positive response she receives from patients keeps her coming back.

"It's so special when people light up when I walk in," said TERRY. "It makes me feel really special. It really makes a difference in their day."

TERRY'S favorite part of volunteering is being able to talk with the patients.

"I hope to make people feel better with my visits," said TERRY. "I thoroughly enjoy it. I have always felt very comfortable in every situation."

"Helen is a wonderful listener," said Cynthia MITCHELL, local HCI Care Services volunteer coordinator. "She has a bubbly personality and is always excited to meet new patients or be a companion to longtime friends who have come to have hospice services."

As an 11th Hour volunteer, TERRY provides a comforting presence by sitting with patients and families during the final hours of life.

"She will always go at a moment's notice and is content to sit with patients in quiet solitude as they make their final journey from this life," MITCHELL said.

Volunteering with hospice has helped shape TERRY'S outlook on life.

"My whole attitude about dying has changed," said TERRY. "I told my children that I look at dying a lot different. It's a part of living. The fear of death for me is gone because of my time spent with hospice."

Iowa has the second highest volunteer rate in the nation thanks to the 38 percent of Iowans who donate their time to brighten the lives of others. Volunteers are asessential to hospice care today as they were when they spearheaded the hospice movement more than 30 years ago.

HCI Care Services, formerly Hospice of Central Iowa, is seeking more volunteers like TERRY. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact Cynthia MITCHELL at (641) 464-2088.

Offering companionship, running errands and assisting with clerical duties are some of the volunteer opportunities available through HCI Care Services.
