Bridge collapses after heavy rains

Heavy rains this past week brought a county bridge to its knees in Grant township on 110th Avenue, north of 190th Street.

"We were thankful that nobody was hurt when the failure occurred," Ringgold county engineer Zach GUNSOLLEY said. "This is anominous warning to those who choose to ignore weight limit signs on the secondary roads' bridges."

The failure reportedly happened during the day on Wednesday, May 25. This bridge was one of the hundreds of FEMA 2010 floodsites that have yet to be repaired. Flood repairs on dirt roads, like where this bridge is located, generally have a lower priority than gravel or seal coat road flood re-pairs.

"We would like to get all of our repairs completed more timely, but the department cannot complete such a large volume of work in a short period of time," GUNSOLLEY said.

GUNSOLLEY expressed concern that this spring's heavy rains have further weakened Ringgold county's already damaged roads, bridges and culverts.

Funding problems will continue to plague the county in the months ahead, GUNSOLLEY noted.
