Six girls in running for 2016 fair queen
Six young women from Ringgold County will be running for the title of 2016 Fair Queen.The ceremony is set for Wednesday, July 6 at the Ringgold County Fairgrounds at 7:00 p.m. The queen and princess contests will be held along with a Bill Riley Talent Search show that night. Last year's queen, Jaci Haidsiak, will be at the event to crown the new queen. Duties of the fair queen include assisting with a number of county fair events as well as competing in the Iowa state fair queen contest in August as the Ringgol county representative. The queen is also responsible for organizing the queen and princess contest for the year following her reign. Queen candidates include Kirsten Dolecheck, Brianna Dory, Haylea England, Kasydi Klommhaus, Cassidy Lohmann and Megan Warin.

Six girls up for fair princess
Six girls from Ringgold county will be running for the title of 2016 Ringgold County Fair Princess at the contest Wednesday, July 6. The princess will be crowned at 7 p.m. The fair princess will participate in various parades in the county and assist the queen in handing out ribbons during fair revents. The princess candidates include Livia Buckner, Tarynn Dredge Brittlyn Nickle, Clair Routh, Kynlee Still and Cenadie Young.

Searching for the Best Brownie in Ringgold County
After finding the best chocolate chip cookie in Ringgold County during the 2015 county fair, Open Class organizers have created a new and tasty contest for this year's fair, which begins July 6. This year they are searching for the best brownie in the county. Anyone can enter the contest by delivering 14 bars on a paper plate in a zip bag, with name and recipe included. Deadline for entries is 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9 in the Commercial Building. Recipes can be any kind of brownie and cut into bars. Juding will be conduced by county celebries, and the criteria will be simple: apperance and taste. First- and second-place winners
will be announced around noon at the show arena. After judging, the remaining dozen brownies in each bag will be for sale, with the proceeds donated to the 4-H activity fund. Superintendents of Open Class will compile the group of recipes submitted into a booklet to be picked up after the fair at the Extension office for those who would like to try the recipes at home. Open Class exhibits feature variety
The Open Class superintendents invite yout to participate in the many varieties of classes available to everyone. We have categories from photography to quilting to flowers to jewelry to baked goods! Red Star Yeast has been a sponsor of the baked goods division for several years. They provide some prizes for the entrants as well as many packets of yeast and the yeast coupons. Entries for Open Class will be taken
on Wednesday, July 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Commercial Building on the east side of the fair grounds. Exhibits will be released on Sunday, July 10, from 1-4 p.m. You may enter as many items as you wish in each class. There is a preschool division (Kindergarten and younger), junior division (9 years and younger), intermediate (4-H age), and adult. To see the complete list of classes and rules, fair books may be obtained at the Extension Office or the Mount Ayr Record-News One of the many enjoyable activies in the Open Class section is the Silent Auction. If you are a crafter, you might want to display and sell some of
your creations here. Anyone is welcome to bring items to sell, with the exhibitor receiving 70 percent of the final bid, and the remainder going to the 4-H activity fund. Items can also be entered to be judged, then put
out for the auction. For those wishing to purchase items, bids can be taken from Wednesday evening until Sunday at 1 p.m. when bidding is over. For any questions about the Open Class department call Carol Ann Weeda (phone number) or Nancy Sacket (phone number).

On Sunday, July 10, the last day of the fair, the annual sale supper sponsored by the Ringgold County Farm Bureau begins at 5 p.m. Fair activities will conclude with the annual 4-H/FFA premium livestock

The winner of the Best Brownie in Ringgold County contest was Janet Wasteney with her symphony bars. Second place went to Darsey, Daisey and Kasey Dredge with their mud pie brownies. Books with all the brownie recipes entered in the contest will be available free of charge at the Extension Office.
Fair sales nets almost $35,000
Preliminary sales figures from the Premium auction at the 2016 Ringgold County Fair showed a total of $34,935. This is comparable to last year, as the premium sale was $34,595. A total of 12 sheep were sold this year for $2321.84. This compares with 12 sheep sold last year for $1998.80. One goat sold for $102. Last year there were 10 goats that sold for $1611.35. A total of seven head of beef cattle were sold this year, bringing in $10,865.08. This compares to five head of cattle beingin $10,158.66 in 2015.
