County Fair underway

The annual Ringgold County Fair kicked off Wednesday, July 8 with a parade, the crowning of the fair queen and princess and fireworks, but four big days of activity will fill the fair schedule through Sunday, July 12.

Laura Davison, 17-year-old member of the Maloy Shamrocks 4-H club, had a goal to complete a service project that would have a lasting effect on the Ringgold County 4-H program. She applied for a HELP Pod grant by submitting an application asking for funds to purchase four 4-H welcome signs. The Maloy Shamrock received the grant money and the signs were purchased from Iowa State University Extension. The signs will be located at each of the state highway entrances to Ringgold county. This includes the intersection on Highways 2 and 25 (known as Weehler Corner), the Iowa/Missouri state line south of Mount Ayr on Highway 169, Kellerton city limits along Highway 2, and the Union/Ringgold county line north of Mount Ayr on Highway 169.

"My goal with this project is to encourage people to recognize 4-H in a positive way," Davison said, "and I think the signs are a good way to spread awareness about 4-H."

All 4-H members will wear their shirt to exhibit at the fair.

There were 10 goats sold for $1,611.35.

A total of five head of beef cattle were sold this year, bringing in $10,158.66. This compares to nine head of cattle bringing in $21,449.59 in 2014.
