Ringgold residents fare well at state fair
Results from contests and activities at the Iowa State Fair are starting to roll in, and Ringgold County residents are figuring prominently
in the results.Twins contest After placing first for the past few years, Tessa and Jillian Kneip placed second in the "Least Look Alike" competition
of the Twins, Triplets and More contest in their 9-11 year old age division. A set of triplets won this year. The girls are daughters of Shaun and Clint
Kneip of Mount Ayr. County natives Jenny Shields O'Brien and Jody Shields Lipacom placed fourth in their age 18-and-over division for the least
look alike. Quick breads In the Iowa Bed and Breakfast Quick Breads competition Judy Kiburz-Harrison of Mount Ayr placed first in the pumpkin
raisin division, second in the pumpkin with nuts division, second in the pumpkin date division, and third in the pumpkin without nuts division.
FFA breeding beef In the FFA Breeding Beef show, Katelyn Holmes of Mount Ayr showed both the champion and reserved champion Angus heifers. She also
exhibited the champion "all other breeds" bull. Dutch chocolate In the Delicious Dutch Chocolate - A Decadent Dutch Chocolate Treat
competition, Pamela Cooper of Mount Ayr captured first place. Salmon In the Wildly Wonderful Popsie Salmon competition, Pamela Cooper of
Mount Ayr placed second. Contestants were challenged to create a unique dish using the iconic fish. Entries were judged on taste, appearance and
creativity. Breads In the King Arthur Flour Bread competition, Hester Derscheid of Ellston earned first place in the beer division, the black
olive pest and gluten free divisions. Feeder calves In the beef feeder calf show, Kerrigan Mobley of Diagonal placed fourth in the crossbreed
steer division and fifth in the Angus heifer division. Cole Mobley of Diagonal placed sixth in the Angus heifer division. Willis Show Cattle of
Diagonal placed fourth in the commercial heifers division and fifth in the Maine-Tainer heifer division. Double P Cattle Co. of Maloy placed third
in the commercial heifer division, fourth in the crossbred steer division and fifth in the market heifer division. Desserts Pamela Cooper placed
third in the Desserts for Christina competition. Entrants were challenged to make a dessert where chocolate was the main flavor. The chocolate could
include milk, dark, white or a combination. Entries were judged on taste, appearance and originality. Sugar cookies In the Favorite Frosted
Sugar Cookies competition, Judy Kiburz-Harrison won first place. Contestants were asked to take a traditional sugar cookie recipe and make it
their own, by adding a few new twists. Entries were judged on taste, texture, appearance and the accompanying story. 4-H exhibits

Ringgold residents reap honors at state fair Take prizes for baking, flowers, livestock and more
Results for competitors from Ringgold County in contests and activities at the Iowa State Fair continue to come in.
Make It with Lard In the Make It with Lard competition, Judy Kirbuz-Harrison of Mount Ayr placed in a number of categories. She captured first in
the drop oatmeal, ginger snaps, unfrosted and cookies - other - than named divisions. She placed second in the chocolate chip cookie division. She also
placed second and third in the overall dessert division. In the quick breads - pumpkin (non-yeast) division, Kiburz-Harrison placed third.
Cookies Judy Kirburz-Harrison won the reserve sweepstakes honor in the Midwest Living & Gold Medal Flour Cookies competition. She also placed in
many categories in the cookie contest. She won first place ribbons in the molded or pressed - sugar (not rolled or cut) division, in the drop cookies -
dried fruit (other than oatmeal raisin) division, in the drop cookie - oatmeal butterscotch (with or without nuts) division, in the dropped cookie -
peanut butter base division, in the refrigerated and rolled - sandwich cookie division, in the health cookie - whole grain division and in the ethnic
cookie - Chinese almond division. Kiburz-Harrison placed second in the drop cookie - potato chip division, in the drop cookie - frosted drop (any flavor)
division, in the molded or pressed - peanut blossom division, in the molded or pressed - snickerdoodle division, in the drop cookie - chocolate chip division
and in the health cookie - made with sugar substitute division. She captured third in the molded or pressed - peanut butter division, oatmeal chocolate
chip (with or without nuts) division, in the drop cookie - white chocolate division, in the drop cookie - other-than-named division, in the ethnic cookie -
Italian division and in the ethnic cookie - Scandinavian division. In the same contest, Hester Derscheid of Ellston placed first in the drop cookie - no
bake division and first in the health cookie - made with sugar substitute division. She was awarded second in the drop cookie - oatmeal (other than named)
division.
Danish desserts Judy Kiburz-Harrison of Mount Ayr won second place and a $20 cash award in the Danish desserts competition. First place was
no awarded by the judges in this competition. Favorite Thanksgiving dish Judy Kiburz-Harrison of Mount Ayr received honorable mention in the
Favorite Thanksgiving dish competition. Mariani dried fruit Judy Kiburz-Harrison of Mount Ayr won first place and a $100 gift card in the Mariani
dried fruit competition. Contestants were tasked with creating an entry using Mariani brand dried fruit. Entries were judged on taste.
Cooking with sorghum Judy Kiburz-Harrison placed first in the desserts division of the Cooking with Sorghum competition. Create a Winner with
Gurley's Nuts Judy Kiburz-Harrison placed third in the breads and rolls division in the Create a Winner with Gurley's Nuts competition.
Made with honey In the Foods made with Honey competition, Judy Kiburz-Harrison placed second in the honey cookies division and third in the honey
chocolate chip cookie division. Gracefully Gluten Free Pamela Cooper of Mount Ayr won first place in the entrees and appetizer division of
the Gracefully Gluten Free competition. Pedal power pull In the pedal power pull competition, Clarie Routh of Diagonal placed second in the
5-year-old girls division. Ella Waske of Mount Ayr placed fourth in the 7-year-old girls division. Lane Parrish of Diagonal placed second in the
5-year-old boys competition. Floriculture Patricia Parrish of Diagonal placed first in the "Beauty of the Leaves" division in the Floriculture
show. Maine-Anjou beef show In the Maine-Anjou Beef Cattle show, Willis Show Cattle of Diagonal exhibited two place winners in the MT spring
heifer calf division. "Nancy" placed second and "Betty" placed fifth. Willis Show Cattle also captured fourth place in the MT spring yearling heifer
division with "Iggy." In the MT junior heifer calf division, Adelyda Ebersole of Kellerton placed third with "Breathtaker" and Ebersole Cattle
Company of Kellerton placed fourth with "Empress." In the MT senior heifer calf division, Wyatt Ebersole of Kellerton placed second with "Lacey's Eva."
FFA horse show Morgan Quick of Mount Ayr was champion in the barrel racing competition in the FFA horse show. First place in the FFA equestrian
team competition went to the Mount Ayr FFA chapter. FFA dairy goat show Megan Reasoner of Mount Ayr exhibited the champion recorded grade junior doe
in the FFA dairy goat show. 4-H breeding beef show Brynn Nickle of Clearfield exhibited the champion in the all-other-breeds division
in the 4-H breeding beef show.
Stock dog trials In the open class for experienced teams, Bob Johnson of Tingley placed second and fifth at the State Fair stock dog trials.
Niyole Livingston of Shannon City placed third, and Jeff Livingston of Shannon City placed fourth. In the ranch division for less experienced teams,
Johnson place second and third. Niyole Livingston placed fourth and Jeff Livingston placed seventh.
Wether sire/dam sheep In the wether sire/dam sheep show, Bennett/David Club Lambs of Clearfield placed third in the black face yearling ram division.
Outhouse race In the 12th annual outhouse races, the prize for best costume and fourth place went to Clearfield Lions members Celine Beggs,
Jack Beggs, Jakob Beggs and Steve Jennett. Teams composed of three pushers and one driver construct their own outhouses. During the race, teams
push the outhouses to a toilet where the drivers must clean off the toilet seat without using their hands. Then the drivers search for a corn cob
buried in a cattle trough, change a roll of toilet paper and return to the outhouses where the teams push them back to the starting point.
County Century, Heritage farms honored
[Page 10] Five county farms received special recognition at the Iowa State Fair for consecutive years of family ownership.A farm owned by Sandy
Taylor of Mount Ayr and currently operated by Taylor's grandson Daniel and his family received recognition as a Heritage Farm for having remained in
family ownership for 150 consecutive years. Four county farms received Century Farm recognition for family ownership for 100 years. They include
farms owned by Derlin Beard and family; Lloyd, LaVerne, Paul and Todd Glendenning; Vicky Leonard and Jeremy and Amy Novak and family.
At ceremonies at the Iowa State Fair, Sandy Taylor (center), surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, accepted recognition as owner
of a Heritage Farm, a farm that has been in the same family for 150 years. Taylor's grandson Daniel Graham and his family are currently living on and
operating the family farm south of Diagonal.

More area state fair winners announced
Haylea England of Mount Ayr exhibited the Grand Champion Simmental Foundation Heifer at the 2015 Iowa State Fair Open Simmental Show. There were over
450 head exhibited at this show, making it the largest Simmental show ever since the Simmental breed came to the United States. Haylea's parents are
Todd and Julie England of Mount Ayr.
Results continue to roll in for exhibitors and competitors from Ringgold County from the recently completed Iowa State Fair. 4-H livestock In the
4-H breeding beef show, Brynn Nickle showed the champion in the "other breeds division and brought home a purple ribbon. Other purple ribbons went to
Cassidy Becker, Haylea England and Makayla Jones. Blue ribbons were awarded to Megan Warin and Tyler Jones. In the beef showmanship competition, Brynn
Nickle, Cassidy Becker, Haylea England and Makayla Jones brought home purple ribbons. Blues were won by Megan Warin and Tyler Jones. In the breeding
sheep competition, Jolene Ebersole brought home two blue ribbons and another blue ribbon in senior showmanship. In the breeding swine competition, Caroline
McAlexander was awarded two blue ribbons. McAlexander also brought home a blue ribbon in swine showmanship and a purple in the market swine division.
Heritage show Keith Miller from Mount Ayr exhibited a number of items in the Heritage Show. He placed first in the cookie jar division, second in the
Hull pottery division and fourth in the Roseville pottery division. Stock dogs Due to the misinformation furnished by the State Fair publicity
department, we must correct the results of the stock dog competition. According to the information supplied by Bob Johnson of Tingley, his dogs qualified
as grand champion in the open class cattle division, reserve champion in the open class sheep division and reserve champion in the ranch class sheep division.
Niyole Livingston had the grand champion in the ranch class cattle division.

Local state fair prize winners are announced
More results for Ringgold County exhibitors at the Iowa State Fair have been announced.Spotted swine show Triggs Show Pigs of
Mount Ayr captured first place among gilts in their farrow date division and another first place among boars in their farrow date division. Berkshire
swine show England's Berkshires of Clearfield took two third place ribbons in the gilt divisions. Taking seventh and ninth in another gilt division
was 4TK Genetics of Clearfield. 4TK Genetics also placed sixth in one of the boar divisions. Red Angus cattle show Linsie Barnes of Tingley exhibited
the eighth place entry in the February yearling heifer division. Gelbvich cattle show McCreary Family Gelbvich of Mount Ayr exhibited the third place
entry in the early junior heifer calf division.
State fair breaks attendance record
[Page 4] The 2015 Iowa State Fair was one for the record books. Despite a couple of rainy days, an estimated, unaudited 1,117,398 people visited
the 2015 Iowa State Fair, besting the previous 2008 record of 1,109,150. The 2015 Iowa State Fair was held August 13-23.
