In response to a call for service in the army, Dr. G. H. RODGERS left Mount Ayr Tuesday and on April 6 will report to the
Brooke Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX. He will be commissioned a first lieutenant and his service
will extend over a period of two years. Dr. and Mrs. RODGERS and son, Douglas, went to Licking, MO for a visit with their
parents. Mrs. RODGERS and Douglas will remain in Licking until Dr. RODGERS receives a permanent assignment. Dr.
RODGERS, who has been associated with Dr. D. E. MITCHELL since July, 1953, made friends and rendered invaluable
service to the community during his practice here.
Paul JOHNSON was elected president of the board of education of the Independent School District of Mount Ayr at the
re-organization meeting held March 21. Other directors are Helen FENNEMA, Milton HENDERSON, John McFARLAND and
Emmet R. WARIN.
The Mount Ayr Lions Club netted $160 in the promotion of "Pancake Day" Saturday in Mount Ayr, according to Elmore ERICKSON,
chairman of the committee. Aunt Jemima, other cooks and waiters were busy all day serving hotcakes at 25 and 50-cents
per sitting. Products used included 70 pounds of Aunt Jemima pancake flour, 52 pints of Staley's syrup and 12 pounds of 5 More coffee.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert BERG of Clearfield will observe their golden wedding anniversary by holding an open house
Sunday, April 3.
Mr. and Mrs. E. C. WRIGHT Of Mount Ayr will observe their golden wedding anniversary on Easter Sunday, April 10,
with an open house at their home south of Mount Ayr.
The P.M. Place Variety Store, the Glines & Company mercantile Store and the ROUSH Pharmacy at Corydon were totally
destroyed by fire early Saturday morning. The loss was estimated at $250,000. The fire was discovered about 2 a.m. in
the drug store, when an explosion, believed to have been caused by an oil furnace, blew the telephone receiver off the
hook, givng the alarm. The variety store was established in Corydon about two years ago by P. M. PLACE, his sons,
Joe and Kenneth, and nephew, Charlie PLACE. The druge store was owned by R. R. ROUSH, son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. O. W. ROUSH of Tingley.
E. M. WATSON, unopposed candidate to succeed himself as a member of the Ringgold county board of education, received
169 votes at the recent election, according to the official canvass made Monday by the bord. Other board members are
John D. WARIN, Boyd ETHINGTON, James MOON and Lester SICKELS.
