The home of Mr. and Mrs. Percy SKINNER won first place in the religious theme division of the Christmas decorations
contest, sponsored by the Mount Ayr Lions Club. "Candy Land" was the title of the theme that won first place honors
for Mr. and Mrs. Dennis TERWILLIGER in the general division. First place honors in the front door decoration division
went to Mr. and Mrs. Bob ROE. McCullough Motor Company's display was the winning entry in the business division.
Fire of unknown origin about 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon destroyed the dwelling on the Emmet and Leo WARIN 242-acre
farm, one mile north and one and three-fourth miles east of Ellston. All of the personal belongings of Mr. and Mrs.
Don HUFF and family, who occupied the house, were lost in the blaze. Mr. HUFF, who was working out-of-doors, returned
to the house, opened the door and found the room a mass of flames. Mrs. HUFF and children were away from home. A
washhouse was charred but neighbors were able to save the garage.
Petitions for the establishment of the "new" Mount Ayr Community school district were approved by the joint bord of
education of Ringgold and Taylor counties following a public hearing held Monday afternoon in Mount Ayr. The proposed
new district include the present Mount Ayr district of 308 square miles and the Tingley Independent and Tingley
township districts of 21 square miles. The proposed district, embracing 329 square miles, will be the second largest
area in the state, exceeded only by East Allamakee.
