RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, January 30, 1986

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

"Heirlooms in Miniature," a new product line developed in Ringgold county, is being produced on a limited production basis at the Wood Shop, located at 102 E. Madison in Mount Ayr. The idea for the new items was developed from a few customer requests for doll beds for gifts, according to owner Dave SCHRODT.

Kevin JOHNSON has accepted the position as assistant chief engineer with KDSM-TV Channel 17 of Des Moines. JOHNSON, a 1980 graduate of Mount Ayr Community school, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth JOHNSON.

You walk into the Iowa Cafe, order the noon special and are rewarded with a heaping plate of delicious food, served with freshly baked rolls and topped off with homemade pie, all a creation of Ruth CAVENDER. You are served by Rena SMITH (Mrs. Bill), Pat WHITE (Mrs. Phil) or Ann WARIN (Mrs. Bill). Not too unusual, you say. No, Iowans, particularly those from the Mount Ayr area, have been enjoying Ruth's cooking for quite a few years. But this Iowa Cafe is in Mesa, AZ. It comes complete with Iowa help -- all transplanted from Mount Ayr -- and many of the customers are Iowans wintering in Mesa and those who have made it their residence in retirement. Only one employee, of the kitchen help, is not from Iowa. Ruth CAVENDER'S career as a cook was launched in Ringgold county. After graduating from Redding high school in 1951, Ruth worked for a year at Lenox in a dry cleaning establishment, before her real talents for cooking, baking and running a restaurant began to show.

Racinda JACKSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard JACKSON of rural Kellerton, was installed as Worthy Advisor of the Mount Ayr Rainbow assembly Sunday, Jan. 19.

Ken REGER will be returning to the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr to assume duties as hospital administrator on March 3. REGER had resigned from his post, after six months service, in November, 1985 and since has held a similar position at Salem, MO. There were more than 20 applications for the Ringgold position, according to members of the "Search Committe."

One Mount Ayrian -- Lee BRAND -- appeared on the WHO television show, "Let's Go Bowling," last Sunday, Jan. 26, and another -- Keith BASTOW -- has qualified to be on the show. The show usually is on Sunday mornings, narrated by Jim ZABEL.
