School opend across Ringgold county Monday and students in the Mount Ayr Community school district had five new
faces among the faculty. New teachers are Valle SMITH, self-contained special education classroom teacher at the
elementary school; Martha LANDPHAIR, part-time vocal music instructor for kindergarten through fourth grade in
addition to clerical duties; Kristine PETERS, who is teaching the sixth grade; Rick MOORE, new senior high marching,
concert and jazz band director and instrumental music instructor; and Delwyn SHOWALTER, who will be teaching American
history and social studies as well as helping with junior high football and boys track and high school boys basketball
coaching.
Among construction and remodeling projects underway in Mount Ayr over the summer have been the new moderate income apartments
being constructed on North Taylor Street and the remodeling of the Beauty Corner northwest of the square. Jack GARRITY said
early this week that all that remains for the North Taylor Court Apartments to be ready for occupancy is the laying of
carpet and landscape work around the buildings, which is expected to be complete by September 10. Charlotte SUMMERS is the
owner of the Beauty Corner which received a complete face-lift this summer with new siding and a new roof profile.
Two Ringgold county 4-Hers received reserve champion awards at the Iowa State Fair livestock shows last week. Amy
JACKSON showed the reserve champion lightweight steer, and Tammy WALTERS showed the reserve champion spot gilt.
Dick ELLIOTT, manager of IH Parts and Service in Mount Ayr, announced this week the new facility is open for business,
although the business is still in the process of remodeling and organizing parts. The new facility is located in the
former Mount Ayr Implement building at 201 N. Taylor. ELLIOTT has been hired as manager and others employed at present
are Steve WORTHINGTON and Neil HARTMAN, with another mechanic to be hired soon.
There will be three exchange students at Mount Ayr Community high schol when it begins next week. Two -- a girl from
West Germany, Petra SIWITZA, 16, who will be a senior, and a boy, Audun BERSTAD from Oslo, Norway, who is 18 years old
and will be a senior -- are part of the Youth for Understanding program. Frank RAUE, 16, from Cologne, West Germany, is
here through the Open Door Student Exchange program.
Three Ringgold county arm wrestlers won their division in the Iowa State Fair Monster Arm Wrestling Tournament. Winners
included Roger McGAHUEY of Mount Ayr, first place in the fly weight division; Marla STARK of Kellerton, first place in
the women's middle weight division; and Craig BRABY of Maloy, first place in the middle weight division.
