There will be a benefit ice cream social held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at the Clearfield school. Proceeds
will go to help defray medical expenses of Josh SMITH, kindergarten aged son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary SMITH of Clearfield.
SMITH is a teacher of mathematics and physical education in the Clearfield middle school. Josh received first, second and
third degree burns in an accident at his home in early summer and spent six weeks at Blank Children's Hospital in Des
Moines receiving treatment.
Jody DENNEY of Mount Ayr overcame a frustrating summer of competition in pole bending when she emerged as reserve
champsion in junior pole bending in the 4-H Horse Show at the Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Exposition in Omaha, NE Sept. 23. Jody
and her horse, a 12-year-old quarter horse mare named 3 Penny Bars, qualified for the Iowa State Fair by winning 4-H pole
bending at the Ringgold County Fair. However, a tonsillectomy kept her from competing in the state fair. Jody is the
13-year-old daughter of Jim and Karen DENNEY of Mount Ayr.
Seven seniors are part of the Mount Ayr Community Raiderettes volleyball squad this season. Seniors include Angie ELLIOTT,
Andrea MEKUS, Cindy FLETCHALL, Krista SHAHA, Jamie JONES, Jeanne LAWHEAD and Ann FOLTZ.
The grandson of a Redding man recently was named the top high school automotive service technician in the State of Alaska.
Jeffrey REED, 19, of Kodiak, AK won a first place gold medal in the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America competition.
REED is the grandson of Elvin SAVILLE of Redding.
