Voters in the Grand Valley Community school district will be deciding whether the school district should raise an enrichment
levy composed of enrichment property tax and an income surtax when they go to the polls Tuesday, Dec. 4. A similar
proposal last year was voted down.
Mitch SMITH, a Rock Island, IL postal employee, has been credited with saving the life of a six-year-old boy on his route,
who was choking on a piece of hard candy. Mitch is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Stan SMITH of Coal Valley, IL; a grandson of
Mr. and Mrs. Lynden TAYLOR of Mount Ayr; and a nephew of Mrs. Iva BARNHILL of Mount Ayr.
Two resignations from the Tingley town council were received at the regular meeting of the Tingley city council, Cecil ALLEN
and Ernest BASTOW each turned in their resignations. ALLEN'S resignation was effective November 1 and BASTOW'S November 6.
The council appointed Lloyd MILLER to fill the ALLEN vacancy and MILLER was sworn in by mayor Nancy RIGGS. BASTOW'S
replacement will be named at the December 3 meeting of the council.
Marvin E. LANE, son of Mrs. Hazel LANE, was awarded a Doctor of Education Degree from the University of Northern Colorado,
August 11, 1984. Dr. LANE was a 1960 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school and now holds a B.A. degree in elementary
education, a MA degree in elementary remedial reading and an Ed.D. in general administration. Marvin's accomplishment was shared
by his wife, the former Melanie McFARLAND, a second grade teacher in the Lamar school district. Mr. and Mrs. John H.
McFARLAND of Mount Ayr were present for the graduation ceremony and shared this proud moment with their son-in-law and
his family. Mrs. Hazel LANE and Mrs. Inez FISHER, Melanie's grandmother, were unable to attend.
Vanette HUNT of Diagonal is one of two southwest Iowans to receive a $1,000 national scholarship for 4-H achievement. Miss
HUNT was in Chicago attending National 4-H Congress when announcement was made Monday. She was a delegate because of
being named as Iowa's 4-H conservation award winner.
