Woodwork of the recently constructed basement house of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard SOBOTKA, located nine miles north and
three miles west of Mount Ayr, was damaged by fire Friday afternoon after a coal furnace exploded. Clothing which
was hanging in the room where the furnace was located was also burned.
The Prentis Hatchery in Mount Ayr announces its 33rd annual Easter Chick Day, Saturday, March 31. Two thousand
colored chicks will be presented free of charge to girls and boys calling at the hatchery between the hours of
1 and 4 p.m. PRENTIS will also give a Handy Dandy Purina feed scoop with each order of 100 chicks or more.
Forest SMITH of Kellerton announces his candidacy for member of the board of supervisors, term commencing January, 1957,
subject to the will of the Republican voters at the primary election, June 4. Mr. SMITH, who is 64 years old, was born
at Macedonia, Pottawattamie county. He came to Ringgold county at the age of eight years and has been engaged in farming
most of his life. He owns a farm in Monroe township, which he operated until 10 years ago, when he and Mrs. SMITH
moved to Kellerton.
Four students from Mount Ayr schools and their speech instructor, Lee CAMPBELL, attended the southwest district speech
contest, which was held Saturday in Corning. The participants, Marcia FENNEMA, Dan CUNNING, Diane ROTHERT and Kenny LAY,
competed with students from 49 other schools in southwest Iowa for ratings in dramtic, oratorical and humorous
speaking.
Kenny LAY received a I rating in the humorous division; Marcia FENNEMA was given a II in dramatics and Diane
ROTHERT and Dan CUNNING receved II ratings with their oratorical readings. Students who received I's at the district
contest will compete in the state finals to be held the third week in April in Storm Lake.
Certificates of appreciation for 10 years employment with the State Department of Social Welfare have been
issued by the Merit System Council to Roe MAIN and Mrs. Ada BURRELL, both of Mount Ayr.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen STEPHENS of Mount Ayr observed their 50th anniversary of their marriage on Sunday,
March 25.
The Farmers Supply Company in Mount Ayr, which has been owned by Sargent & Company, Inc., of Des Moines for the past
10 years, was recently sold to Warren A. DRAKE and Floyd I. ROE. Possession was given Saturday. The business will
continue to be operated under the name Farmers Supply Co. John FAUST, who has been identified with the business for
the past 10 years, will continue to serve as manager and all other employees will be retained.
