Fourteen Mount Ayr Community musicians will march with the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band at the Fiesta Bowl. Those 14
students include Josie STEPHENS, Erica PETERSOHN, Jacque GEPNER, Erin SMITH, Tracy CAREY, Amy SHAFER, Brandy ADAMS, Aaron
COMER, Ami PATEL, Josh WASKE, Stephanie BAINUM, Darin DOLECHECK, Cody ROE and Travis JOHNSON
Shannon City wood carver earns a good reputation. Scott HOFFMAN, a Shannon City native, who graduated from East Union high
school in 1973, lives with his wife and three children on a farm three and one-half miles southwest of Shannon City, where
he raises cattle. HOFFMAN is self-taught and began because he liked working with wood. His first tools were a chain saw and
a butcher knife. As he became more experienced he felt the need for better equipment which really enhanced articles such as
the seven-foot big bear and a smaller 23-inch one that is for sale at Lamb's Quarters in Mount Ayr.
Gene HANNON, a former Mount Ayr resident, was honored recently named to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association hall
of fame. HANNON, who died at the age of 59 in 1984, made a lasting impact at Bedford, where he taught physical education and
coached baseball for 30 years. During that time he compiled 372 wins and 10 conference championships. He was named
Southwest Iowa Athletic Director of the Year in 1982. The high school baseball field in Beford is named for HANNON.
Two Ringgold county youth have advanced from local competition in the seventh annual National Geography Bee, sponsored by
National Geographic World and Chrysler Corporation. Michael FARIS, a Mount Ayr Community eighth grader, and Tyrel BRINER,
a Diagonal Community school sixth grader, have won the school level competition at their respective school. FARIS
and BRINER will now take a written test. The top 100 scorers in the state will be eligible to compete at the state
Geography Bee in April.
A former Kellerton resident is performing with the Brazos Crossing Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, in
Texas. Tammy FUGATE sings lead in the 21-woman choral group and has beenperforming with the group for five years. The
group is made up of women from the Fort Bend County and southwest Houston. FUGATE is pharmacy manager at a Walgreen's
Drug Store in Houston, TX. She is the daughter of Dean and Rose FUGATE of Kellerton and a 1975 graduate of Grand Valley
Community high school.
