Seniors from the Kellerton unit of the Grand Valley Community school district returned May 16 from an interesting and enjoyable
trip to the east coast. Students going were Eileen MALONEY, Marie JENSEN, Rex FOWLER, Larry DOOLITTLE, Bill PRIEST,
Jerry FUGATE, Joyce GIBSON, Eugene BULLOCK and Ernest SMITH. Adults going were Mr. and Mrs. Everet HUNSICKER.
Mr. J. W. HILL is a patient in the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines convalescing from a broken hip and bruises
suffered in a two-car collision, which happened Wednesday of last week two miles west of Afton on Highway 34.
A suit in equity in which the Eastern Iowa Telephone Corporation, LeRoy T. CARLTON, Bertel T. MALMQUIST and Perry D. WOODWARD,
plaintiffs, are seeking to acquire control of the Ringgold County Mutual Telephone Company, defendant, opened
Monday in the district court of Ringgold county.
Judy KEPLINGER, Mount Ayr Community high school senior, is winner of the 1959 American Citizenship Award, as presented
by the Iowa State Bar Association and the Iowa State Bar Foundtion. Grant L. HAYES, Ringgold county attorney, made the
presentation of the award during Monday afternoon during the Class Day Program. Miss KEPLINGER is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Harold KEPLINGER of Monroe township.
Gary WION, junior, placed fourth in the Class A track and field meet held Saturday at Iowa State College in Ames, as he
tossed the discus 132 feet, 6 1/2 inches. WION set a new record for the local high school and broke the record foremly
held by Corwin (Corky) INGRAM. WION was accompanied to Ames by coach Chet ROED, Joe McNEILL, Eddie BROWN, Elton SACKETT,
and Dick HERRINGTON.
The West End Market is open for business following extensive remodeling while being closed last week.
Mildred DRAKE, who will graduate Thursday from the Northwest Missouri State College, Maryville, MO, has been named winner
of the United Business Education Association Smead Award "in recognition of having been selected as the most outstanding
1959 business education student in her class." Miss DRAKE is a daughter of Sheriff and Mrs. Warren DRAKE of this city.
