Rex GALLOWAY escaped injury when his tractor overturned as he was plowing last Monday on the Duaine KNAPP farm near Redding.
The accident happened when the tractor was turned too sharply on a sloping hillside, according to Carl PETERSEN, who
adjusted the loss on the tractor Tuesday morning.
Members of the Mount Ayr chapter, Future Farmers of America, received highest recognition at the state convention held
Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Council Bluffs, Leland DOLECHECK, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank DOLECHECK, of Mount Ayr,
ws one of the 10 members fom Iowa to be nominated for the coveted American Farmer Degree. This is the highest degree
awarded an FFA member and only one is nominated for each one thousand members. Ronald LYNCH, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Aubrey LYNCH of Maloy, Philip FOLTZ, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen FOLTZ,and Gary CAMPBELL, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn
CAMPBELL, all of Mount Ayr, received the Iowa Farmer Degree on Friday morning.
The top gilt brought $95 in W. P. TURNER & Son'S ninth annual Hampshire bred sow sale held April 19 at the sale barn
in Mount Ayr. The offering of 100 head averaged $70 per head.
The violent tornado, which struck Ringgold county about 4 p.m. Saturday evening, left one family homeless, destroyed
nearly all buildings n the farm and inflicted heavy damage to at least a dozen other farms over an area five miles in
length. Mr. Jack ELLIOTT, who resides on the O. G. DIXON farm at the junction of Highways 2 and 66, told a representative
of the Record-News, that the storm was preceded by heavy rain and hail. While observing the menacing appearance of the clouds
from her south window, she saw the twister strike the timber on what is known as Page Hill. It passed just west of the
ELLIOTT residence, inflicting some damage to a corn crib and overturning a brooder house. The violent storm inflicted its
first heavy toll at the Lyle SWANK farm, one-half mile northwest of the DIXON place, where the roof was blown from the house
and nearly all buildings were swept away. On northeast across Highway 66, the Lou ADAMS farm was extensively damaged.
A porch, siding, shingles and 14 windows were blown from the house. A few pigs and chickens were killed and three sows
were crippled. Other property damage included the loss of a barn, two hog houses, chicken houses, double corn crib,
shop house, garage, toilet, brooder house and damage to yard and lot fences.
