UPSETS MARK FIRST ROUND of CAGE TOURNAMENT

Diagonal Gets 34 to 32 Win From Sharon

Second Round Pairings
Upper Bracket:
Webster City vs. Williamson (2:30 p.m.)
Logan vs. Mason City (3:4) p.m.).
Lower Bracket:
Ames vs. Creston (7:30 p.m.)
Diagonal vs. Ottumwa (8:40) p.m.).

DES MOINES, March 26 (AP)--Creston and Diagonal thrilled 5,000 Iowa basketball fans here tonight with breath-taking victories as play was concluded in the first round of the state high school tournament.

Creston's 22 to 20 decision over West Waterloo and Diagonal's 34 to 32 triumph over Sharon, previously unbeaten in 27 games, climaxed one of the most exciting days in the history of the state inter-scholastic classic.

Ottumwa's 21 to 10 victory over Maloy, a class B team, in the final game tonight was only incidental to the fireworks which preceded the show finale.

Second Round Today

Six class A teams and two class B clubs survived the first round bombardment, and started arranging their defensive plans for further shelling in the second round at the Drake fieldhouse tomorrow.

The fans were given their biggest thrill, and likewise their most severe shock, when Webster City's ball hawks eliminated Davenport, a favored nominee for the title, 32 to 29, in a morning contest.

The Davenport upset followed Williamson's 38 to 37 overtime victory over Bronson, a class B rival, in the opening contest of the first round.

Webster City and Williamson start the second round tomorrow afternoon at 2:30. Logan and Mason City will follow in the feature contest of the afternoon program at 3:40.

Ames and Creston, apparently evenly matched, open the night show at 7:30 p.m., and Diagonal and Ottumwa conclude the second round starting at 8:40.
