Winners were named this week in the annual MARC 84 Christmas lighting contest. First place in the residential category
went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe ROUTH on Shellway Drive. Second place honors went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry
GILES. Third place was won by the home of Dr. and Mrs. Duane MITCHELL. Winner of the commercial lighting contest was
Guys and Gals Beauty Shop.
A Mount Ayr woman was killed in a traffic accident south of Mount Ayr Saturday morning, Dec. 22, the second traffic
fatality in Ringgold county in 1984. Lori KING was the vicitm of the accident at 11:15 a.m. Also injured in the
accident was Lindsey COMER, four, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Syd COMER of Mount Ayr, who was thrown from the car in the accident.
She was transferred by ambulance to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. KING was driving south in a car owned
by Jim HYMBAUGH of Mount Ayr when the vehicle went off the east side of the road, through a fence and into a ditch just
north of the Warren ANGUS farm home, according to law enforcement authorities.
It is nearing "kickoff time" for some 234 members of the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band on their way to participate
in the 1985 New Year's Day Cotton Bowl parade in Dallas, TX. Included are eight from Mount Ayr Community high school --
Vickie DRAKE and Sherri SMITH, alto saxophone; Amy STEPHENS and Stacy CUNNING, flute; Becky MYERS, clarinet; Becky
HALEY, trumpet; Mark HICKMAN, French horn; Jerry NOBLE, percussion; and a former Mount Ayr community student, Jon
McALEXANDER, trombone. Also going will be two from Diagonal -- Jeanette ROBERTSON and Troy CLARK.
A Ringgold county farmer, Kenneth DRIFTMIER, recently received the 1984 Forage Producer Award presented by the Iowa
Forage and Grassland Council (IFGC). The award is presented to several Iowa forage producers each year in acknowledgement
of their forage and management, production and marketing achievements.
Four retirees, from among those employed in Ringgold county courthouse offices, were honored at an employees-guests
party. Plaques were presented to Elbert STRANGE for his 24 years as Ringgold county sheriff; Virginia "Susie" CORLL
for her 22 years as Ringgold county auditor; and, Doyle TRULLINGER for his eight years on the board of supervisors.
Aden STEWART, custodian, received a gift of a pocket knife for his seven years of service.
Six senior girls are part of the Mount Ayr Community Paiderette basketball team this season. They include Tammy WALTERS,
Becky WEEHLER, Karla McGINNIS, Kaite MONAGHAN, Lisha SMITH and Michelle HENRY.
Penny BOLES was crowned queen and Garen PALMER king of the Grand Valley Community homecoming activities in Kellerton.
BOLES is the daughter of Bernelle (sic) and Peggy BOLES of Grand River while PALMER is the son of Wayne and Ann PALMER
of Grand River.
