The end of the current year marks the close of a long and successful business career for J. E. (Barney) HORNE, who will
retire after being identified with the drug business in Mount Ayr for 45 years. On that date, he will turn the business
over to Bill HAROVER, who joined the firm as a partner on January 1, 1956.
Early morning "shoppers" Monday at the Benton service station no doubt finished their Christmas gift list by obtaining
money, cigarettes and flashlights in an unorthodox manner. Entrance to the station, owned and operated by Pete
CAVENDER, and which was open for business until 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening, was gained by breaking out a rear window.
The list of "gifts," as determined by Mr. CAVENDER and Sheriff Elbert STRANGE, who investigated the break-in, included
$35 in quarters and halves and $10 in dollar bills and two cash registers, 13 cartons of Winston and Camel cigarettes,
two cases of beer and four silver and red flashlights.
