Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, April 27, 1989

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

Academic acclaim has come to four area high school seniors as the Des Moines Register has picked an Iowa academic all-state team, named 1989 academic all-state honor rolls from each of five geographical areas and listed 139 youth as being outstanding in sciences. Named to the 1989 academic all-state honor roll from the southwest regional of 21 counties were three from Ringgold County -- Billi HUNT of Diagonal, Amy AKERS of Grand Valley of Kellerton and Brent McCLURE of Mount Ayr. In this listing were 66 students. David SAVILLE of Diagonal was one of those receiving Outstanding Science Awards presented by the Iowa Academy of Science.

Mount Ayr Community high school's top senior musician was named at the spring band concert held at the MACHS auditorium Monday night. Andrea MEKUS, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Max MEKUS of Mount Ayr, was presented the Arion award by Jim BISHOP, president of the Mount Ayr Lions Club, at the concert.

Two Ringgold county 4-H members were selected as State 4-H Council members from Southwest Iowa and were also named state 4-H officer candidates at interviews held recently in Atlantic. Bobbi HUNT and Billi HUNT of Diagonal are two of six state 4-H council members from the area named following the interviews.

Former Mount Ayr resident, Mark COLLIER, now living in Idaho Springs, CO., followed up winning the state novice power lifting contest two months ago by taking the open division championship at 242 pounds when the state competition was held in Denver, CO recently. COLLIER had a 400 pound bench press, 500 pound squat lift and 600 pound deadlift to win the competition. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne COLLIER of Mount Ayr.
