John HENDRON, vice chairman of Citizens Bank of Leon, announced today that the bank plans to expand its banking services into Mount Ayr. A loan production
office in Mount Ayr is in the process of being approved by the Iowa Division of Banking and is expected to open in April. An application is being filed
to offer full banking services, with an opening expected about May 1. The new bank office will be located in the former First State Bank location on
Highways 2 and 169 to the east of Lynn's Texaco Food Mart.
Hakon Martin BERGSTROM, a foreign exchange student from the Scandinavian country of Norway, is residing in rural Mount Ayr for a year with Rick and Marilyn
HAWKINS and their sons, Forrest and Lyndon.
A Mount Ayr woman has been named the Farm Service Agency director in Clayton county. Joyce FROST of Mount Ayr is serving as the FSA office director in
Elkader. She commutes to the job from Mount Ayr -- spending weekends back home. A part of managment trainee program, FROST was required to accept a
position in any location in the state where an opening occurred.
Pastor Doris KINTON announced her retirement as pastor of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Mount Ayr, as of the last day of April, 1998. Phil,
Doris and their three children, Tom, Lorinda and Karla, came to Mount Ayr to begin their ministry on August 28, 1977. This year, Phil and Doris celebrated
the 40th anniversary of the ordination and have served 20 of those years here either as co-pastors or as pastor. Doris became pastor when Phil had
to take disability retirement.
Scott HOFFMAN of Shannon City has been carving detailed three-dimensional figures for around 15 years. Woodcarving is a time consuming, satisfying
hobby. Despite his great talent in carving, he has kept the carving a hobby instead of a business in the past. He is now looking into advertising
over the internet and does take orders for carving.
Three Mount Ayr Community Raider wrestlers have advanced to the state wrestling meet in Des Moines. Brett SHIELDS at 103 pounds, Justin GOURLEY at
135 pounds, and Jermon ALEXANDER at heavyweight will be taking part in first round wrestling action at Veteran's Auditorium in Des Moines. The
three wrestlers all took first place in their weight divisions at the district tournament in Truro to advance to the state meet. The wrestling team
is coached by Eric EHLEN.
