Marv WOOLLUMS of Mount Ayr won the state championship in horseshoe pitching competition at the Iowa State Fair over the weekend.
WOOLLUMS pitched his way to the title over six other pitchers who had won titles and tournaments earlier in the summer.
WOOLLUMS also picked up the title of the Midwest Senior Classic earlier in the week at the fair.
County residents continued to bring home numerious awards from the food competitions at the state fair. Kathy McGAHUEY won
the Katie Couric look-alike contest and Craig and Brenda WILLIS had a champion in the open class feeder calf heifer competition.
Mikaela MILLSLAGLE of Lamoni, reigning fourth runner-up Petite Princess of Iowa, is a state finalist again in the 1999
American Code Pageant. MILLSLAGLE, five, is the granddaughter of Terry and Jackie WEEDA of Mount Ayr.
Shirley HIGHTSHOE of Mount Ayr recently earned an award for logging 1,000 hours in the American Quarter Horse
Association Horseback Riding Program.
Benjamin J. POPPE of Mount Ayr is one of the 24 students to receive college scholarships from Mercantile Bank this
fall. POPPE is the son of Gene and Nancy POPPE. He attended Mount Ayr Community high school and will be a sophomore
at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls studying accounting.
