The spelling contest directed by County Superintendent Louise Askren was held Saturday in Mount Ayr. The words were pronounced by Floy Reed, principal in the Mount Ayr Public School. Mildred Withorn, of Athens township, took first prize, which was a trip to the state fair in Des Moines this fall with all expenses paid, where she will take part in the contest. Gladys Allson, of Ellston, took the second prize of five dollars. Sadie Sheil, of Rice townsip, third and four dollars; Blanche Roberts, of Mount Ayr, fourth and three dollars; Grace Worthington, fifth and two dollars; and Clark Lamphere, of Rice township, sixth and one dollar. All the other contestants were awarded a large flag for their schools.

Grade cards were give out Firday and the customary "weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth" followed.

W. G. Bragg, of Waukegan, IL., has accepted a position with A. D. Neptune, and with his wife will come to this city to make their home. Mr. Bragg is an expert plumber.

Chas. Wroughton took charge of the mail route on Monday.

The directors of the Mount Ayr Light & Power Company accepted the option Thursday from the David G. Fisher Co., of Davenport, for the sale of the local plant at an agreed consideration of $15,000, the purchasers to assume the indebtedness of $3,000 and to assume they paying taxes not paid and other liabilities. It is a pleasure to note that R. M. Lewis, the efficient managers of the company, will be retained by the Davenport company, should the sale of the plant be concluded under the terms of the option.

HIGH SCHOOL NOTES - The annual May Day fete will take place after school on Friday afternoon in the grove back of the Laughlin property. Eva Wood was elected May queen by the high school boys and Emma Lepley as her attendant. Each one of the grades will present a folk dance or drill.

KNOWTON - At a recent meeting of the school board, the following teachers were elected: E. M. McANINELL, principal; Grace Adams, intermediate; and Vera Norris, primary.
