Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 23, 1982

by Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

Mary Sue WEBB was named president of the Mount Ayr Community school board and the board traveled to Sun Valley Lake to view the roads there and talk about student pickup in the area as a part of their regular school board meeting Monday night.

Three Mount Ayr businesses have made their appearance in new offices and locations in recent months. Two are on the square - The Southside Tavern and Ringgold School of Dance. The other is Garrity Construction, which occupies he office space formerly used by Pine Construction at 102 East Adams Street. Owner Jack GARRITY moved his business operation from his home to the new location about two weeks ago. Secretary-bookkeeper in the new office is Jan MUNSTERMANN of near Arispe.

The Ringgold School of Dance is under the direction of owner and instructor -- Jane LAWHEAD (Mrs. Collus).

The Southside, a tavern and eating place, was extensively remodeled by the new owners - Bob and Linda HALEY - after a devastating fire and the sale of the business by former owner, John WORTHINGTON.

Announcement was made this week by Carroll BAKER, president of the board of directors of Rideta Electric Cooperative, that Larry E. HOPKEY of Denison has been selected to become manager of Rideta Electric Cooperative, effective January 1, 1983. HOKPEY is married to the former Virgene RYAN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amos RYAN of Mount Ayr. She is presently employed as a kindergarten teacher in the Denison schools.

Becky ANDREWS of Benton is one of 15 Northwest Missouri State University education majors engaged in the student teaching portion of their preparation to become teachers. Becky is assisting in the psychology and geography departments in the Mount Ayr Community school district under Mr. James SAVILLE. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert SCHAFER of Mount Ayr.

Talley Sue HOHLFELD, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William HOHLFELD of Mount Ayr, has two by-lined articles in a current issue of Mechanix Illustrated magazine. The Ocotober issue includes the two articles. HOHLFELD interned at the magazine last year while a student at Northwest Missouri State University at Kirksville, MO.

Mrs. Marion HENDERSON of Mount Ayr was elected president of the Creston District United Methodist women during an annual, all-day business and program meeting.

Alan TAYLOR of Mount Ayr and Iowa Conservation Commission employee, helped in the Sand Creek Wildlife Area northeast of Ellston recently. The release of birds is part of a program in which 7 ruffed grouse will be released here. The birds are being trapped in Michigan and flown to Iowa. Some 25 of the birds will be equipped with radio transmitters to help conservationists track their movement, cause of mortality and to monitor nesting success. The ruffed grouse are originally native to this area but were killed off in Ringgold county in the early part of the century. The ruffed grouse are protected from hunters in this area of the state according to Melvin MOE, wildlife conservationist. The grouse are being traded for wild turkey trapped in Iowa and transported to Michigan.
