The Diagonal girls softball team tallied a decisive 26-10 victory over the Mount Ayr team Monday night at the Diagonal
diamond. Mount Ayr scored the first run but trailed throughout the remainder of the game. Joyce DUKES was on the
mound for Diagonal and Joan STEPHENS did the receiving. Mary Ann WOOD pitched for the losers and Janet WOOD and Martha
LAMB shared catching duties. Other Mount Ayr players were Louise BURCHETT, Kay JARVIS, Judy BLACK, Sheryl CAMPBELL,
Harla STEPHENS, Mary Sue BASTOW, Mary Evelyn CANNON and Connie SANDAGE. Included among the Diagonal players were
Dixie RAMSBOTTOM, Dixie TAYLOR, Kay WATSON, Diana TAYLOR, Judy TAYLOR, Jinny TRIDLE, Ann WATSON and Carol HAYWORTH.
Mary Lou PEDERSEN has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship to complete her senior year at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Miss PEDERSEN graduated in September 1858 from nurses' training at the Bethany Hospital School of Nursing, Kansas City, KS,
since which time she has been attending school at Boulder, working toward a degree in public health teaching. She is the
daugher of Mrs. Lyndon RICHARDS of Pueblo, CO and Arthur PEDERSEN of Beaconsfield.
A semi-trailer load of watermelons was unloaded Monday morning at 8:15 a.m. near the Clarence BRABY farm four and one-half
miles south of Mount Ayr on Highway 169. However, it was not by consignment but by accident. Bobby Jack KERSHENER of
Bolivar, MO was en route to Mount Ayr with a load of watermelons from the Payne Produce in Springfield, AR. Deputy sheriff
Doyle SCOTT, who investigated the accident, said KERSHENER apparently went to sleep at the wheel of his Diamond T truck.
The semi-trailer careened west across the highway, hit a ditch and upset its load. The dirver escaped injury, however,
the tractor and trailer were extensively damaged according to Mr. SCOTT.
Royce and Pearl DAVIS, with a low score of 42, won the couples golf tournament played Sunday afternoon at the Mount Ayr
Golf and Country Club. Other low scorers were William and Susie CORLL with a 45 and their son-in-law and daughter, Russ and
Norma DAVENPORT, who shot a 47. Arrangements for the tournament which was concluded with a family picnic for the golfers
and their families, were made by Mr. and Mrs. Elmo ROE and Mr. and Mrs. Jack COATES.
Loren LAMB of this city will be one of eight Iowa persons to receive awards for "volunteer and meritorious service" by
Governor herschel C. Loveless at the Governor's Day celebration to be held July 25 in the Clear Lake city park. A Life Saving
Award will be presented to Mr. LAMB for saving the life of Brad CUNNING, nine years of age, on July 9, 1958. Brad and
his father, Dwight CUNNING, were pinned under a tractor when it overturned on the CUNNING farm. With the assistance of
neighbors, the tractor was righted and Mr. LAMB revive Brad and saved his life by administering artifical respiration.
