Winners of the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce's annual Christmas lighting contest were announced this week. First place
went to the home of Barbara and Harold BOWER; second place went to the home of Ed and Jan STILL; and third place went
to the home of Todd and Julie ENGLAND.
A new manger scene has joined the many Christmas scenes of the Ringgold county courthouse lawn this Christmas season,
due to the efforts of the Mount Ayr Liions Club. The club raised the money for the scene and set it up near the shelter
house on the courthouse lawn this winter for the first time. It joins a number of other scenes illustrating the songs
of Christmas which decorate the four sides of the square.
A plaque was given to Raymond HENSLEY for 20 years of service on the Mount Ayr city council at its meeting Monday night.
Dick ELLIOTT was recognized for 10 years of service and Steve TAYLOR for four years on the council. The three have terms
which expire with the first council meeting in 2000.
Three Ringgold county Catholic sisters were featured in a segment of Living In Iowa, a program on Iowa Public
Television, shown last week. Marian KLOSTERMANN, Joanna RETTENMEIER and Nan ROSS, three nuns sent by Iowa bishops to
Maloy, were featured in the segment "My Three Nuns." The program introduced the women who extend their services to all
people in need, no matter what their religion, around the area.
Brett SHIELDS brought home a title at 119 pounds, the only wrestler to make it to the finals [from Ringgold County] in the Atlantic
Invitational tournament in Atlantic Friday night.
