Mount Ayr Community high school will have 62 more graduates when commencement ceremonies are held Sunday, May 25. The class
of 1986 includes 28 girls and 34 boys, with more than 70 percent of the graduates planning to continue their education
following graduation.
Construction on the Ringgold Group Home could begin by September if all requirements are met soon. At present the
preliminary drawings are being made.
An accident in Mount Ayr involving a bicyclist and her passenger being struck by an auto at the Lincoln-Monroe Street
intersection is being investigated by local law enforcement officers. Robbin UTT, nine-year-old daughter of John and
Vera BYROM of Mount Ayr received a bruised knee and skinned leg in the accident which happened Monday,
May 19, about 3:45 p.m. as she and her twin, Brad, were riding her bike home after attending Mount Ayr community
elementary school abou two blocks away. Brad had a bruised leg and face, his mother said.
An era ends with Mount Ayr Community high school graduation ceremonies May 25. Since 1933 there have been family members
of the late Roy and Ruth BRYAN attending here. The last of the clan, Don BRYAN, graduates this year and the family will
no longer have a representative in school.
This year there will be 72 recipients sharing $14,100 in scholarships offered by the Judge Charles LEWIS Scholarship Fund.
Mount Ayr Community high school graduates are eligible recipients.
The Ringgold county courthouse square in Mount Ayr will take on a much more festive look every day as work on the
courthouse square beautification project continues. The project is being funded through a state cultural grant which must
be matched by local funds, and the Ladies Unlimited club in Mount Ayr has taken on the responsibility of helping raise
the necessary funds.
Malinda STRINGHAM was named the winner of the Arion award as the top senior instrumental student and Gary BAKER received
three outstanding art awards during the annual spring fine arts festival at Mount Ayr Community high school.
The presenting of awards and scholarships were part of graduation ceremonies for 17 Grand Valley seniors held May 18. The
valedictorian, Tracy LESAN, who had a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and the salutatorian, Jack VANDERFLUGHT, with a
3.77, received trophies for this achievement.
When final grades were tallied, there was a change in the naming of Clearfield's valedictorian and salutatorian. The
Clearfield valedictorian was Angie SPURRIER and the salutatorian, Dan THOMSON; Diagonal's was Todd TAYLOR and Lesa STEPHENS,
respectively. These and other honors were presented at Diagonal-Clearfield graduation ceremony held May 17.
Lee BRAND, line superintendent at Rideta Electric Cooperative, Inc. in Mount Ayr, accepted a safety award recently in
recognition of the REC's one year of operation without recording a lost time accident from Don GREENE, assistant director of
Job Training and Safety, Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives.
Marc ROBERTS, manager of the Place's store in Mount Ayr, presented a check this week for $100 to Anne BOWERS toward the
money needed by five Mount Ayr Community junior high students to attend the two-week scholars program at Drake University
this summer. .
