RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, March 22, 1956

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

On the occasion of their 55th wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. HUGHES held open house Sunday afternoon at their home in Beaconsfield.

C. Arthur HANSEN was re-elected superintendent of the Mount Ayr schools under terms of a three-year contract as submited Monday night at the reogranization meeting of the board of education. Mr. HANSEN, who is serving his first year as head of the local schools, receives an annual salary of $6,300. Under terms of the new contract, he will receive an increase of $300 for each year.

Mr. HANSEN has been well received in Mount Ayr and has rendered approved service as evidenced by the fact that the board offered him the three-year contract.

Mr. and Mrs. O. C. HULL quietly observed the 65th anniversary of their marriage Sunday at their home in Kellerton.

Edith KIDNEY, owner of the Real Style Shop in Mount Ayr, was elected president of the Business and Professional Women's Club during a meeting of that organization held Monday evening. Mrs. KIDNEY succeeds Lucille WILLEY, who has conscientiously conducted the duties of that office for the past two years.

Fire caused an estimated damage of $750 Monday afternoon about four o'clock to the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Don SMITH, one mile west of Tingley on Highway No. 169. The fire originated in the attic above the kitchen and the cause was attributed to defective wiring. The roof, siding and windows were damaged. The Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department and neighbors responded to the fire alarm. The loss was covered by insurance with the Frank P. CLARKE Insurance Agency.

Jim BURGE was elected president of the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club at a meeting of members held Friday night. Other officers are Sam NEWTON, vice-president and Bill HAROVER, secretary and treasurer. Mrs. Art SCHMIT was elected president of the women's division.

Coach Dale HERRINGTON of the Diagonal Maroons this week made public his decision to resign from the coaching spot he has held since 1946. Mr. HERRINGTON'S resignation will create also a vacancy in the commercial department of the high school, where he has taught very successfully.

The Tingley State Savings Bank and the First State Bank of Diagonal received awards last week for having exceeded 1955 quota for the sale of series E and H savings bonds to individual customers. It was the second consecutive year these banks exceeded their quotas.
