RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, November 21, 1985

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Tricia SHIELDS, 14-year-old daughter of Ronnie and Sandy SHIELDS of Ellston, received serious injuries to her left arm when it was wrapped around the shaft at the top of an auger. Tricia and a family farm employee, Kevin GREENLAND, had been unloading corn at the SHEILDS farm one and one-half miles southwest of Ellston about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, November 16, when the accident happened.

Losing parts of both arms in an accident with a hay baler more than 30 years ago has meant adjustments but hasn't kept REYNOLDS from adapting to many new situations. July 10, 1953, Earl "Shorty" REYNOLDS was alone, working on a hay baler. one arm got caught in the machinery and the other was engangled trying to remove it. He hollered until his wife, Opal, and their children heard his cries. REYNOLDS was 51-years-old, still have five of his seven children at home and was planning on doing a lot of living. He found he had to start with determination to "do what he had to do."

John WARIN was re-elected presidend; Marvin TRIGGS, vice president; and Jack COOK, secretary, during two [Ringgold County] fair board meetings held on successive Monday nights, Nov. 11 and 18.

After helping in the process of bring[ing] Dr. Bhalchandra PATEL to Mount Ayr, Governor Terry BRANSTAD asked to meet the PATEL family, who recently came to Mount Ayr from Scotland. The Drs. PATEL and daughters Purvi and Ami met with Governor BRANSTAD in his office.

After more than 25 years of dedication to the postal service, Arnold COMBS retired as rural mail carrier for the Mount Ayr Post Office. The first 22 years he was a substitute carrier for Jack MONAGHAN, Marshal, MATTHEWS and Roger MORRISOn and the last two years was a regular when Roger MORRISON retired.

Tracy LESAN, a senior at Grand Valley Community high school, has been named one of the winners of a University of Northern Iowa presidential scholarship, it was announced this week. As one of the 15 scholarship winners, Lesan will be provided with financial support equal to the current tutition, room and board rates, and the scholarship is automatically renewable at UNI for four years.
