Doug HOSFIELD, campaign manager, reports that the Ringgold County Farm Bureau has reached its 1980 membership goal. HOSFIELD
said the county reached its goal of 875 members on Feb. 18. The total includes 60 new members.
Randy BISHOP of Mount Ayr and Ron MOBLEY of Benton have been named 1980 Pony Express chairmen of Ringgold county by the
board of directors of the statewide volunteers horsemen's organization. Tom Matt of Boone, president of the Pony Express
Riders of Iowa, Inc., said Randy and Ron will organize and coordinate local activities during the coming weeks for
the 12th annual "Ride That Crippled Children Can Walk."
At at special meeting of the Ringgold County Conservation Board last Tuesday, the resignation of Mark VERSCH, the board's
executive officer, was received and accepted. VERSCH has accpeted a position as resource planner with the Papio Natural
Resource district in Nebraska. VERSCH is completing his third year here, during which time the Ringgold trail was
developed on the former RB&QW railroad right-of-way east of Mount Ayr. Mrs. VERSCH is the home economics teacher in the
Diagonal school system.
Volunteer firemen were called at 7:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, to Smith Trailer Court in east Mount Ayr to extinguish a
fire under the Janet GROSE mobile home. There was approximately $100 damage done around heat tape where it started and
some smoke damage in the mobile home, firemen said.
Mr. and Mrs. John E. COMBS of Clearfield will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, Feb. 24.
Students of the secondary and post-secondary Office Education Association of Iowa met with Governor Robert Ray Monday
morning, Feb. 11, at the state capitol. Lori WOOD, a student of Mount Ayr Community high school and OEA state parliamentarian,
accompanied by her sponsor, Mrs. Jean YEAROUS, attended the meeting.
Steve WEBB, a former Mount Ayr resident who is now manager of Borwn's Shoe Fit Co. store in Kearney, NE, was presented
the "Store of the Year" award at the company's recent annual meeting in Shenandoah. WEBB is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill
WEBB of Adel and grandson of Edna WEBB and Doyle BAKER of Mount Ayr.
On Feb. 19, 1908, Harrison M. OLNEY and Ethel Cora GUTHRIE were married in the home of the bride one and one-half miles
east of Mount Ayr. They became the parents of five sons. On Feb. 17, 1980, their family honored them with a dinner and
reception at the Red Carpet Inn in Mount Ayr on their 72nd wedding anniversary.
National FFA week was February 15-23. Local chapter officers were Mike WARIN, assistant secretary; Greg JOBE, assistant
treasurer; Darwin CAMPBELL, secretary; Rod HINTZ, reporter; Roger DOLECHECK, sentinel; Kevin TRIGGS, vice-president;
Larry DRAKE, assistant reporter; Tom KRAMER, president; and David SHIELDS, treasurer. Steve JOHNSON is the advisor. Rod
FARIS was an American Farmer Degree candidate. Tom KRAMER, Kevin TRIGGS and Denis LINK were Iowa Farmer Degree
candidates.
