Some of the first videotape of the damage inside the Pentagon after last week's terrorist attack showed an office with a
couple of safes -- and a candy dish on the safe filled with Tootsie Rolls. A former Mount Ayr resident can tell you all
about that office. It was just across the way from the office where she works in the Pentagon - and which she had just
left 25 minutes earlier. For Marjorie MILLARD, sister of Dwight HICKMAN and Lowell HICKMAN of Mount Ayr, the destruction
at the headquarters for the United States' military is all too real.
A Mount Ayr resident has qualified for the regional tournament in the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League this year. Vic
LILIENTHAL has qualified to take part in the regional fishing tournament in Paducah, KY. LILIENTHAL, an amateur, has been
tournament fishing for a number of years and has been in the Wal-Mart league for two years. He won the fishing tournament
at Little River Lake in Leon this summer, his first tournament title. He hopes to get more sponsors and go more places
next year.
A new feature has been added to the landscape at Judge Lewis Park in Mount Ayr. A new batting cage is being erected,
located between the west ball field and the tennis courts. The batting cage is a memorial to the late Lefty GEIST, who
was a former professional baseball player and sports fan.
Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home will be celebrating its 100th year in business by sponsoring a pancake breakfast
Saturday during the Autumn in the Ayr celebration.
A moment of silence was held with members of the Mount Ayr Community and Prairie City-Monroe football teams on the field
before Friday night's football game, something done at all high school football games in the state.
Activity in Mount Ayr and several other Ringgold county communities slowed down significantly Wednesday afternoon when
electricity was shut off to a large number of county communities so that Alliant Energy could work on installing new
equipment at the sub-station north of the Old Depot in Mount Ayr. Four Alliant employees worked on the project, with
electricity turned off at 4 p.m. and restarted at approximately 6:40 p.m. While most businesses had to close down
during the outage, Hy-Vee Food Store came up with a remedy of the electricity problem. They opened up their outdoor grill
and sold sandwiches and pop, cooled with ice. They also had some outdoor bargains for shoppers during the electrical outage.
