DeAnna FARIS had the highest Ringgold county market beef placing in the carcass class of the AK-SAR-BEN 4-H beef show
held in conjunction with the live competition. DeAnna FARIS' market beef had a blue ribbon placing in the live class
and a purple ribbon in the carcass competition. Cory WILLIS had a purple ribbon entry market beef in the live class
and it placed blue in the carcass. The other WILLIS entry had a red ribbon rating in live and a blue in carcass.
Mount Ayr community high school's marching band received a division I rating for the first time in 20 years in the
Class 2A state marching band competition at Iowa State University in Ames Saturday. The band, directed by Marty ALDRICH,
was judged on its field marching abilities in the contest.
Dr. Duane MITCHELL is reported to be getting along well as he recuperates from injuries suffered in an October 5 farm
accident. He is in Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines receiving treatment for a fractured fibula, below the left
knee, and severe muscle damage to the left leg and a fractured bone in his right foot.
Steve MITCHELL, owner of Mitchell Drug Store, Inc., and Forget-Me-Not Flowers and Gifts in Mount Ayr was honored as
Associated Druggist retailer of the year at a meeting of the Associate Druggist wholesalers held in Florida this month.
MITCHELL also gave a speech on retail advertising and techniques for small businesses.
Lamoni ended the season for the Mount Ayr Community Raiderette volleyball team Tuesday night when they downed the girls
3-1 in the opening round of the sectional volleyball tournament in Leon. The match was the final one for six seniors --
Jeanne LAWHEAD, Angie ELLIOTT, Andrea MEKUS, Jamie JONES, Cindy FLETCHALL, Krista SHAHA and Ann FOLTZ.
Heather CLARK, a 15-year-old Diagonal Community high school sophomore, is one of the 229 members of the Southwest Iowa
Honor Marching Band that will be performing in the Cotton Bowl parade in Dallas, TX January 2. Heather plays the flute in
the honor band, although she also can play the piccolo. She is the daughter of Jim and Ann CLARK of Diagonal. This will
be her first time as a participant with such a group.
Twelve Mount Ayr Community high school students will be taking part in district all-state music festival auditions
Saturday, Oct. 22. Eight high school instrumentalists and four vocalists will try out. Trying out for the chorus are a
quartet of Susan BASTOW, Barb McCREARY, Chad MAPES, and Sean THOMAS. Trying out for positions with the instrumental music
organizations will be Ron SCHAFER, trombone; Bryan SCHAFER, tuba; Scott SMITH, tuba; Shonn MAPES, tuba; Kelli MASON,
baritone saxophone; Jeremy CULBERTSON, tenor saxophone; Brent McCLURE, tympani; and Ryan SMITH, snare drum.
