It's official. Mount Ayr Community elementary school was chosen this week as one of eight schools in Iowa to be recognized
as Iowa FINE Schools under a program of the state First in the Nation in Education (FINE) Foundation. The purpose of the
Iowa FINE Schools recognition project is to identify and call attention to public schools that are unusually successful
in meeting the educational needs of all their students.
Ringgold county was one of six Iowa counties where a drought emergency was declared by Governor Terry Branstad Monday.
What started out as a Christmas gift of a camera has blossomed into a free trip to Hawaii for a Mount Ayr girl and her
family. Nicole MURPHY, 10, daughter of Joe and Debbie MURPHY of Mount Ayr, received a little Pixie Ansco camera from
her grandmother, Marilyn RICHARDS of Mount Ayr, this Christmas. With the camera came information on how to enter
a picture taken from it in a photo contest the Ansco camera company was running. One day soon afterwards Nicole arranged
her black baby doll and her sleeping white kitten together so it looked like the pair were sleeping together and took
a picture. She entered that picture in the contest, with the help of her mother. The telephone call came to Debbie
MURPHY this week that the picture had been chosen as the winner of the nationwide contest. The winner received a trip for
four to the island of Maui for a week's stay in a condominium, a free rental car and $2,000 worth of spending money
for meals and entertainment.
Four FFA chapter members from Ringgold county were among outstanding FFA members from across the state receiving the
"Iowa FFA" degree at the 61st annual Iowa FFA leadership conference in Des Moines Friday. Brian COOK, Lanette SHEILDS
and Bob TAYLOR, all juniors at Mount Ayr Community high school, and Shelly JIMMERSON, a senior at Grand Valley
Community high school, received the award, the highest degree conferred on members of the Iowa Association FFA.
