It's official. Ringgold County has its first ties to an Oscar winning actress after Hilary SWANK won the best actress
award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Sunday night. SWANK was nominated for her starring role as
Brandon Teena/Teena Brandon in "Boys Don't Cry," the role which has won her serveral other acting awards including a
Golden Globe.
The Mount Ayr Community sixth grade math bee tied with Creston for first in the Area Education Agency math bee in Creston
recently and will advance to the state math bee in Marshalltown May 6th. Individually, Lyndon TRIGGS took second, Cody SOBOTKA
was third, Tanner ENGLAND was fourth and Adam JACKSON was sixth to help the team to the top finish. Members of the team
were Sarah GEIST, Lauren JOBE, Adam JACKSON, Lyndon TRIGGS, Cody SOBOTKA and Tanner ENGLAND. Marilyn HAWKINS is the sponsor
for the math bee group.
Two Ringgold County residents will be part of an Iowa all-star team which will play in Ireland this summer. Shannon McKERN,
a Mount Ayr Community high school basketball player, and Kylene STAMPS, a Diagonal high school basketball player, have been
selected to represent Iowa and the United States as members of an Iowa All-Star basketball team.
