With the closing of the Mount Ayr Hotel by owner Mabel RICE, the era of a downtown hotel that served the community,
comes to an end. Mrs. RICE has owned the hotel since the late 1940's. When the time came that the cost of heating
the building became prohibitive, Mrs. RICE decided to close the doors. The building is believed to be the oldest
business structure in Mount Ayr, but as yet it hasn't been determined exactly when it was built.
Dale WALKUP was elected president of the Mount Ayr Community school board and WALKUP and Janet McCLURE were sworn
in as new board members at the reorganizational meeting of the board Monday night.
Among the 170 persons who gathered at the Mount Ayr Community high school commons for dinner, a program and fellowship
Sunday night, Sept. 8, were those who are living proof that help can come. They joined with referral personnel -

clergy, medical professionals, employers and labor representatives, family members and Central staff - in celebration
of the first year of the existence of the Harold HUGHES Center in Mount Ayr.
