It's on to the state jazz championships again for the Mount Ayr Community Raider jazz band, which won its division at the Southwest Iowa Bandmaster's
Association district jazz festival in Treynor Friday. The jazz band received a division I rating and the highest point totals from all three judges
to place first by 19 point in the Class 2A judging at the contest. The Raider band had the highest point total of any band in Class A of 1A in the
judging as well.Two Mount Ayr Community high school jazz band members received special recognition when the Raider jazz band placed first in the
Southwest Iowa Bandmaster's Association jazz festival at Treynor. Scott LAURITSEN was named top soloist of all the Class 2A soloists in the contest
for his tenor saxphone solos. Joel JENNINGS also received special recognition for his guitar solo work with the band.
Over 350 people attended the four performances of the female version of Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple" presented by the Moonlighter's Theatre Group in
the Ringgold county courthouse assembly room in its four-day run last week.
The daughter of a Mount Ayr resident has had several poems published in national anthologies. Diane C. STEIGER, daughter of Judy DRAKE of Mount Ayr, who
now lives in Lancaster, CA, has had original poetry published in "An Evolving Secret," a treasury of poetry compiled by the National Library of
Poetry and "Moments of Solitude," another book by the same firm.
The 10 mount Ayr Community high school speech students who will be participating in the state individual speech contest at Roosevelt high school in Des
Moines are Amanda WERNER, Laura JONES, Paul KILGORE, Scott LAURITSEN, Amy HYNEK, Jamie HAIDSIAK, Josh HALEY, Lindsay COMER, Rachel DERSCHEID and
Becky PARRISH.
