Ellen McALEXANDER, 17, of Beaconsfield, will join 31 other Iowa delegates at the National 4-H Congress in Chicago,
IL on Nov. 25-29.
Randy McDONNELL of Mount Ayr has been named to a term on the Mount Ayr Public Library Board that will expire in 1981. He
will fill the unexpired term of Rollin NOBLE of Mount Ayr who has resigned.
Five Mount Ayr employees of Iowa Southern Utilities received recognition at the company's annual western district
award party last Thursday evening. Among the 11 company employees honored were Marilyn SCHLAPIA, accounting clerk II,
15 years; Elizabeth GREENE, accounting clerk I, 10 years; Robert F. HALEY, apprentice district lineman, 10 years;
Lowell HOWIE, apprentice district lineman, 5 years and Raymond HENSLEY, apprentice district serviceman, 5 years.
Lori WOOD, a senior student in office education at Mount Ayr Community high school, was elected state parliamentarian of the
Office Education of Iowa at the state fall leadership conference held in Des Moines on Oct. 8 and 9.
Mildred ELLIOTT was elected president of the Iowa Federation of Republican Women at the state organization's
biennial convention held last week in Des Moines.
The graduate faculty of the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL conferred the degree of doctor of philosophy with a
major in higher education administration on Robert L. BURRELL, Aug. 25, 1979. Dr. BURRELL graduated from Mount Ayr
Community high school in 1965. He received a bachelor of science in education from Northwest Missouri State University
in 1970, master of science education with a major in student personnel administration, Iowa State Univeristy in 1972.
Mrs. J. H. EDDY, chairman of the newcomers committee of the Mount Ayr Community Improvement Club, greeted two families
who have moved to the Mount Ayr area. Mr. and Mrs. Rick YODER moved from Bloomington, IL to 106 Sunset Lane, and
Sara CALDWELL has moved from Lamoni to 209 South Harrison.
Michelle WILKINS, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merlin WILKINS of Tingley, has advanced to the national level of the
1979 4-H college scholarship competition. Ringgold county extension director, Preston HAYSE, says that Miss WILKINS
will compete with other former 4-Hers for a $1,000 scholarship donated by the Edwin T. Meredith Foundation. Winners
will be announced prior to the national 4-H Congress in Chicago this November.
Firemen answer to two grass fire calls. Fire was confined to the railroad right-of-way four miles southwest of Maloy at
6:12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, and no damage was reported by Mount Ayr volunteer firemen who were called out. It was
along the John O'CONNOR farm. Firemen were called to a brush and grass fire one mile west of Redding about 7 p.m.
Monday, Oct. 15. It took about two hours to extinguish because of the brush but there was no damage to anything
but the brush and grass.
