Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa

Britt Fell

Mrs. Harry [Minnie Mae (KOHNLECHNER)] PETERSON, 65, died at Ringgold County Hospital last Wednesday due to fatal burns sustained at her home on Tuesday.

Mrs. PETERSON was burning trash at her home six miles outside of Diagonal when the accident happened. She suffered a fainting spell and fell into the fire, causing critical burns. Although she was badly injured, Mrs. PETERSON was able to get inside the house and lay (sic) on the couch where she remained for three house until her son Henry returned from work and found her.

She was immediately rushed to the hospital where doctors attempted to treat her. During the time before her death, Mrs. PETERSON was able to give some details about the accident to attendants and family members.

Mrs. PETERSON will be deeply missed by her surviving members which include her husband, three daughters (Mrs. LeRoy SHEETS, Mrs. Paul JAMES, and Mrs. Garland HOLLAND) and four sons (John, LeRoy, Clifford and Henry).

The residents of the United States as well as other countries are rejoicing the recent development of the polio vaccine. Although this will be a huge turning point in the war against this fatal disease, the battle still has yet to be won. That is why Mrs. Billie FINCH of Mount Ayr has decided to accept the appointment of Ringgold county volunteer chairperson of the Polio Fund Appeal. The Annual Polio Fund Appeal of the Sister Elizabeth Kenny Foundation will be held this summer and fall. The funds will be used to train registered nurses and physical therapists to beceom Kenny therapists and to keep up its sponsorship of research and medical education.

Mrs. Willie CORLL was involved in an accident on Thursday morning which resulted in a broken nose. She was smacked with a No. 7 iron during golf lessons with a group of ladies at the Mount Ayr golf course. CORLL was teaching a golf class to some women when the incident occurred. She had just shown Mrs. Lyman LARSON the correct way to hit the ball and stepped back to let her try it on her own. Apparently, CORLL did not step back far enough as she was struck in the face with LARSON'S golf club as she followed through with her stroke. CORLL was taken to the doctor's office where she was given a number of stitches to close the wound.

Ray LAIRD of Rice township died in the Ringgold County Hospital on Monday. He had been involved in a tractor accident at the Elgie DRAKE farm where he was fatally injured. Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at Rose Hill Cemetery.
