Marie EURITT, daughter of postmaster and Mrs. Marion EURITT of this city, and a senior in the Mount Ayr Community
high school, reigned as queen of the school's annual homecoming festivities Friday evening.
An expectionally large crowd representing several states, attended the dissolution sale of CARR & BEEDE at the farm,
two miles west of Kellerton, on October 12. Cattle found a ready market and wide acceptance, being distributed over a
large area. Gross sales totaled $65,015 for an average of $417.
Two students of the Mount Ayr Community high school brought home Division I ratings from the state baton twirling
contest held Saturday in Villisca. They are Jeani BASTOW, senior, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles BASTOW, and Kayla
SMITH, freshman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll SMITH, all of Mount Ayr.
Jack GROSS, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. (Joe) GROSS of Mount Ayr, suffered a slight brain concussion, fractured
right leg, forehead and lip lacerations and bruised when thrown from his horse about 5:50 p.m. Thursday evening. The
accident happened as the youth rode his horse west from his home on Columbus Street to a pasture on North Hayes Street, where
the animal was to be turned out.
Herbert W. BASTOW has requested the withdrawal of his candidacy for mayor of Mount Ayr at the municipal election to
be held Tuesday, Nov. 5. The request was made in writing to Opal RUSK, town clerk. In what promises to be a most interesting
election, with contests for all offices, the field of candidates for mayor has narrowed to three -- Willie D. MILLS, J. L.
SCHARDEIN and Victor THOMPSON. Ten men seek the five positions on the town council. The candidates are Howard BRYAN, Max
BUCK, Harold DAVIS, Nick DUROS, L. w. GROSS, Charles J. HARVEY, James E. MAHAN, Howard R. PAIST, W. F. RUBY and DOyle
SCOTT. Four persons are candidtes for the three positions of the park board, as follows: Eldon MAIN, Donald DAILEY, Dale
HARRINGTON and Joy MITCHELL.
Two coin changers at the Kellerton Laundromat, owned by Ora FUGATE, were rifled Tusday night and $37 in change was taken.
The loss was not discovered until yesterday morning. The loss was reproted to Sheriff Elbert STRANGE, who made the
investigation.
Sixteen neighbors and friends of Elton PRIEST of Kellerton recently harvested beans in a 45-acre field rented by Mr. PREIST
from Mae MILLIGAN. Seven combines, three trucks and three pickups were used and the yield was approximately 28 bushels per
acre. Men who participated were Duane JOHNSON, Bud HIGHTSHOE, Frank BIERLEIN, Francis McDOWELL, Ray BROOKS, Rex and Everett
PAYTON, Jack HUGHES, N. H. and Joe CAMPBELL, Earl MERRITT, Herbert JACKSON, Orla VAUGHN, Pete HOFFMAN, Charles MILLER and
Frank DEEMER. Mr. PRIEST suffered a fractured heel September 24 in a fall from a ladder at his farm.
Two large pumpkins, weighing 130 and 119 pounds, are on display at the McCullough Motor company showrooms in Mount Ayr.
They were grown from seed obtained from Germany by Rodney ADAMS, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil ADAMS of Poe township. The 130-pound
pumpkin measures 71 inches in circumference and 83 inches from stem-to-"stern."
