RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, December 17, 1987

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

Second snow of the winter season turned the landscape into Christmas card scenes when a winter storm dumped more than six inches of snow here Monday night. The storm closed school at Grand Valley and delayed other area schools, but the county missed the worst of the storm which dumped up to a foot of snow on some areas of the state.

A new Christmas event in Mount Ayr debuted Saturday night with the Christmas Window Walk. People walked around the square and looked in a dozen windows where characters were acting out Christmas scenes.

Mount Ayr Community high school has three exchange students. The students are Miki OGUCHI from Tokamachi City, Japan; Heiko SIEVERS from West Germany, and Angel HERNANDEZ from Monterrey, Mexico.

The Ringgold County Farm Bureau received one gold star in the Iowa Farm Bureau recognition and awards program for 1987. Royce DIVELY of Kellerton, county president, accepted the award at the Iowa Farm Bureau annual meeting in Des Moines recently. Ringgold county received gold star recognition for membership. The county was rated in a membership category of counties with 0-999 members.

Ringgold county will have new county engineer as of January 1. Lynn SICKELS of Creston, who has been serving as part-time engineer filling in since the resignation of Tom SNYDER April 30, 1987, will begin full-time duties. SICKELS is the son of Cecil and Maxine SICKELS of Mount Ayr and the husband of the former Janet WOOD of the Ellston community. SICKELS is an Iowa State graduate and at one time served as Keokuk county engineer and most recently has been executive director for the Southern Iowa Rural Water Association.
