Shirley GOINS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd GOINS of Diagonal, was elected vice-president of the state 4-H girls organization during its 31st annual convention held June 7-10 on the Iowa State University campus in Ames. A May graduate of the Diagonal Community high school, Shirley is an eight-year member of the Jolly Jinglers 4-H Club and has served as girls county president and county recreation officer.

Three persons escaped injury Saturday in a two-car accident, which happened about noon, four and one-half miles north of Mount Ayr on Highway 169. They were Mrs. Raymond GREENE and young son of Ellston, occupants of a 1959 Ford driven by Mrs. GREENE, and Marvin TRIGGS of Mount Ayr, who was driving a 1955 Buick.

Donald "Jake" DAILEY was elected commander of Ringgold Post No. 172, American Legion, at the regular meeting of the organization held Monday night. He succeeds Robert RICHARDS. Other officers elected were Ike McGEHEE, 1st vice-commander; Everett REYNOLDS, 2nd vice-commander; Harold GOLLIDAY, 3rd vice-commander; Walter BRADLEY, adjutant; Linn SHEIL, finance officer; Marvin REYNOLDS, sergeant-at-arms; Charles W. LAWHEAD, chaplain; and Lyle DULANY and Elmo ROE, service officers.

Jack WILKINSON of Floris has been offered a contract by the board of education of the Mount Ayr Community school district to teach high school mathematics. The position of mathematics instructor was elected as guidance director following the resignation of Carl FENN, who had served in that capacity for the past two years.

Joe DENHART and Don SMITH returned Saturday from Camp Dodge, where they had attended Hawkeye Boys State. The youths, who will be seniors this fall in the Mount Ayr Community high school, were selected to attend the annual week-long event by Ringgold Post No. 172, American Legion. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Doyle DENHART and Mr. and Mrs. Howard SMITH of Mount Ayr.

W. B. CUNNING is the new president of the Mount Ayr Lions Club. Mr. CUNNING, owner of the W. B. CUNNING Company in Mount Ayr, succeeds Len R. BEATH, who served efficently in that capacity this past year. Other officers elected were Arthur SCHMIT, 1st vice-president; Verdon PAYNE, 2nd vice-president; Leslie PARK, secretary-treasurer; Donald "Jake DAILEY, tail twister; and Charles W. LAWHEAD, lion tamer.

Ricky STOUT, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle STOUT of this city [Mount Ayr], was seriously injured June 4 in a tractor accident, since which time he was been confined to the hospital in Denison. The accident happened on the farm of Ricky's grandfather near Charter Oak, where he had gone to spend the summer. Ricky, who fell from a tractor and was run over by a harrow, suffered arm and chest injuries. He was removed to the Denison hospital, where he submitted to surgery on Monday of last week and later will undergo skin grafting. His condition is listed as fair.
